Russia wanted India ever since 18th century because of all the sweet resources, trade routes and an access to Indian ocean which would be a tremendous military advantage. The Soviet war in Afghanistan was primarily about building up a corridor to India.

Not sure how much you already know about them, but the people who would become Russians were vikings from Northern Europe who migrated to the area by river. Russia began as a region called Muscovy (which is where Moscow gets its name) where people from the original powerful Eastern European state of Kieven Rus migrated to escape the invading Turkic tribes. But Muscovy was eventually conquered and ruled by the Golden Horde, which was part of the Mongol empire. They had to pay tribute to the Mongols for a while. There's so much I could talk about.
If you want to know about some entertaining parts of Russian history, read up on the Crimean War and how bad Russia sucked in it. Russia has always been a pretty backwards place, lagging behind the rest of Europe. They even had serfdom all the way up until World War I. Even though serfdom disappeared from other parts of Europe way back in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Kazan Khanate weren't nomads, they were/are settled Muslim turkic people living near Kazan from 8th century, with cities and stuff, predating mongols by a long time. In 16th century they raided nearby Russians from time to time, but so did Russians. They were "successor state" of the Golden Horde, but so was Muscovy.
Crimean Khanate were the nomads whose main source of income was raiding and enslaving Russians. They were the real problem from 15th century up until 18th. This bit is partly true but mostly incorrect. They were infact semi-nomadic Volga Bulgars, and only settled down from pastoral nomadism once they joined the Golden Horde and became the Kazan/Qazan Khanate.

What is your source? I got an impression they more less settled down as early as 10th century. I mean, they had cities, like Bolghar, practiced agriculture, trade a lot. Also the region itself is mostly forest, not steppe, it's hard to be a traditional nomad there.

I feel like i'm about to be Muscovite Defence Force here but you're really overplaying the Kipchak Crimeans. To compare the damage they did compared to the Golden Horde at its prime is pretty rediculous. While it was a regional competitor with the Muscovites, it in no way "raped them until the 18th Century." By the 17th century, even, the Russians were the ones beginning to "rape" the tartars/siberians.
Also both examples you gave of them doing significant damage to the muscovites occurs in the 16th Century.

It is a long running dispute with evidence and argument going bothways. We could both argue and both bring up contradictory evidence, but it is fairly safe to assume they were a majority pastoral nomadic people (much like their Uralic, Siberian and Turkic neighbours) but their unique geography on the Volga meant they were governed from a monarchic trading hub.
