What did he mean by this?
>>

It means he dindu nuffin and you should accept him as the true upholder of the Han dynasty.

Well that much is obvious, but I was hoping for help on that specific quote.
>>
>>282879
It means he would rather be a cunning sly asshole than be fucked over by other people.
>>
>>282887
The confusing part is what he is quantifying with "The world" in both parts. I mean, you can imagine Cao Cao betraying both the whole world in principle and individually both as things he'd say he'd RATHER do, but what does he mean by the world betraying him? The entire world, the world in principle - or one person in particular, ie ANY part of the world.

I have no idea if it is less ambiguous in noodlespeak.
>>
>>282862
He explains it in more detail here >>>/wsg/837546
>>
>>282862
He says that it's better to fuck others in the ass rather than being fucked in the ass.
>>
>>282862
remember that time he stabbed his uncle?

that.
>>
>>282932
>disregard ethics

>acquire power
>>
>>282943
That's the jist of it, which everyone other than Liu Bei would probably agree with, but in the quote he takes that further to "the whole world", which is where it gets confusing.
>>
>>282908
ANY part of the world, namely the one he was being fucked by.
>>
>>282962
But in the first part of it, I get the feeling he means betraying the entire world "in principle". I think I get it, like >>282956 says that story was the perfect example of this ideology. It's a pretty hardcore one if you take that interpretation, which is why everyone's so shocked to hear it I guess. I feel like Nietzsche would be right up in this shit.
>>
>>282970
any part of the world, or all at once. the point is he's not gonna give up and nothing can make him.
>>
>>282970
OK it means he's not going to let ANYTHING fuck him over and he will fuck everything over before that happens.

Some things have been thought too hard about and this is one of them RN.
>>
>>282977
Right, that is the interpretation I meant.

I don't know why this phrase always confused me, something about it seems kind of clunky.
>>
Was Cao Cao actually an able poet?

Watching this TV series, and I guess the same would hold true for the Romance of the Three Kingdoms source material, I really get the vibe that the fact that Cao Cao is conspicuously of lower birth than, say Liu Bei, is a big part of why one is written as a despicable devil and the other as Chinese Jesus who can do no wrong. Shu obviously has all these conspicuously godlike figures in every position.

What is the scholarly opinion on the real characters of, say, those two historical figures?

The man who strikes the first blow has great advantages, like Israel's strategy in Six Days Wars

Liu Bei was a paragon of virtue
>>
The real quote is "I'd rather betray others, than have others betray me."

寧我負人,毋人負我!

The one you cited is an attribution
>>
>>283086
Was the attribution from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms though? I mean half of that shit is made up, but it is more or less the canonical versions of those characters in chinese culture, right?

To My Wine - Poem by Cao Cao -

"To my wine I sing
of the times of peace,
when officers shall not make calls at the door.
The ruler is bright and virtuous,
His ministers loyal and trustworthy.
Abiding by propriety and courtesy,
The people have no cause for lawsuits.

From three years of farming, nine years of stores,
The granaries overflow with grains
While the elderly have no need to labour.
Rainfall is abundant and of proper time,
The myriad of crops a great harvest yields.
From the highways are pulled back mighty steeds,
Their manure used to fertilize the fields.

From dukes down to viscounts,
all love the common people,
demoting the unworthy, raising up the good
As fathers and brothers they nurture the people.
Those who defy the law
are punished according to the severity;
though none is so selfish as to take roadside property.
The jails are all empty,
and on Solstice day no sentences are pronounced.

All live to eighty or ninety,
and pass away only of old age.
The ruler's compassion touches all creatures equally."

Walking From Xiamen And Looking At The Blue Sea -

"East face Jieshi mountain
And gaze blue sea
Water how dancing gently
Mountain island towering
Trees grow thick
Hundred grasses lush
Autumn wind soughs
Big waves rise up
Sun moon their journey
As if from this in
Milky way splendid
As if from this in
Very lucky very lucky oh
Song sing wish
East of Jieshi mountain, I gaze at the blue sea.
The water dances so gently, the mountain island towers.
Trees here grow thick, a hundred grasses are lush.
The autumn wind soughs, great waves rise up.
The path of the sun and moon, seems to come from within.
The splendid Milky Way, seems to come from inside.
Oh, I am so lucky, to be singing my song!"
