Were the Romans unique in having a public entertainment system devoted to fatal combat?

Seriously its like a gorier WWE except you actually own the people in it.

Romans were degenerated psychopaths and the Greeks are the real Jews of the world.

Both of them should be annihilated and erased from history forever.

No. For one thing the Greeks have a Monomakos: which is a boxing/wrestling match that can be deadly.

For another, the guys that came after them: the Medieval Europeans, had Tournaments. Early medieval tournaments were pretty deadly, especially the Melee.
>>
I'm pretty sure that contrary to popular beliefs most of these fights weren't to the death. I have no sources though so completely ignore this comment.

In addition: outside of Europe, the only other cunts that have fatal combat as a public spectacle were the Chinese.

The Chinese have this thing called "Lei Tai" (literally: Fighting Platform), in which -usually- unarmed martial arts matches are held. The rules are simple: anyone who gets beat to submission or gets thrown off the platform, loses.

However the highlight of everyone's day is if private armed duels are going to be held. Duelling in Imperial China is only illegal if done privately: there must be witnesses or else its just murder. So the Lei Tai was also a sanctioned space for duelling between slighted gentlemen.
>>
>>276722
Gladiators were more like the WWE in that it was play-acting for the most part.

French duelling on the other hand was a real spectacle, no messing around. Just put the other guy in the ground as soon as possible,
>>
I remember reading that gladiators fight weren't to the death, because gladiators were expensive and an investment.
>>
>>276722
Most gladiatorial matches were to first blood and not to the death.

>In addition: outside of Europe, the only other cunts that have fatal combat as a public spectacle were the Chinese.

Japan used have samurai duels.

Thais used to have fight-to-the-death Muay Thai matches.

Africans had fucking Mandingo fighting.
>>

>Africans had fucking Mandingo fighting.
Myth
>Japan used have samurai duels.
It wasn't part of an entertainment system though save for those swordsmanship duels with a bokken.

The Chinese one literally made a game out of a squabble between gentlemen.

Thai one is spot on, now that I remember.

Shang dynasty in China had circular buildings beleived to house combats associatyed with tortoiseshell and bone inscriptions that were probably betting slips.

Am I the only one who thinks this shit should be re-legalized and broadcasted so long as it's voluntary? Imagine the arenas: spinning blades, trap doors, machine guns flamethrowers, electrified wires, rabid animals. It'd be fucking sick.

Did they actually do the thumb thing like in Gladiator?
>>

There was some sign, but we have no way of knowing if it was a thumbs up.
>>
>>276722
aztecs used to do it to
but it was more of a sacrifice to the gods then just for entertainment
they would chain someone to a block give them mock weapons and have them face 5 jaguar warriors in full combat gear at the same time
if they survived they would be released

>implying they survived
>>
>>277699
The mock weapons were made out of feathers iirc. Top kek. Imagine if some MMA aztec motherfucker actually won by grabbing some dude's weapon.
>>
>Sounds like a gorier WWE

So MMA?

My friend thinks WWE is the most hardcore combat sport there is. Not kidding.

actually they where given macuahuitl (pic related) but with the obsidian replaced by feathers
so they still hade a big ass bat to beat someone with
but you where still rigth tho
and usually it was the bravest/most skilled of captives wich they got from war so the one getting sacrificed usually put up a good figth

but there is slim chances they survived against 4-7 fully armed opponents wich where also part of the elite warriors
>>
Gladiatorial contests resulted in far fewer fatalities than popular media would have you believe. Contests held sine missione were actually quite rare.

His argument was that Rey Mysterio frequently breaks his legs during stunts. Basically since the accidents are hardcore it makes WWE manlier than boxing and UFC.

They were fighting to the death when it was a time for a massive show off. Gladiators were extremely expensive and if they died, the game's organizer had to pay for them. When the fight was to the death, it was a message given to all that the big guy who made the show happen is powerful and fabulously rich.
>>
>>276722
the greeks brought slaves into their plays if a character were supposed to die. Then they killed him on stage.

>fatal combat
Gladiators almost never killed each other except on accident or if one fought like a pussy bitch and lost.

The idea was to see a little blood and sport, not an actual fight to the death. They did happen from time to time, but it was rare as fuck and probably a huge event if it happened.

Now, what the Romans did in regards to slaughtering animals and criminals in the arena was fucking weird and crazy, but gladiators were worth a ton of money and rarely ever died.

IIRC, many gladiators were Roman citizens who volunteered to become a slave for a set number of years in order to become a gladiator. They got payed mad dosh by the end and got payed to fuck rich roman chicks; not a bad life at all.

Polo, popular among later romans but developed in the greater Iran, was apparently way more dangerous back then. I recall an emperor of Trebizond dying while playing polo.

Not comparable with gladiatorial games, though.
>>
>>277608

i think it'd be a fucking amazing sport that wouldn't necessarily have to be lethal.

just make all the swords blunt and electrified so they hurt like a motherfucker anyway, and cover them in pain so the contact leaves red marks which would be used to decide the score at the end of the round.
>>
>>278417

Im not sure about this, but didn't they found small stone tablet in britain with pretty much basic rules of gladiatoral combat? Something like points for every hit etc?

You know like in boxing if a fight dosn't end in KO, they usually put judges, combine points for hits and technique and pull the winner.

If they found something like that in some wooden box in britan imagine how complex would be rules in glorious arena of rome!
>>
>>277699
They clearly sometimes survived, since after the warriors they had to fight with the Left-handed one to be released. Left-handed warriors were considered to be better than right-handed ones.

It would happen if the TV continued to reign supreme. In spite of public shows of moralism, TV programming has become more and more sadistic.

Reading up on Lei Tai, this is more MMA than Gladiatorial.

Actually: IT IS MMA, there's no rules at what martial art should be practiced. Only that the fool surrenders/gets thrown off.
>>

TV isn't getting more sadistic, only more denigrating.

we've had violent contests on TV for a LOOONG time

bait but sure i will bite

>he thinks people actually died in the Arena

well sinced they used the arena as a form of execution i can say with certainty that people died in it

>he thinks Romans were blood thirsty

they where they would pit animals against each other just to watch them die
they once put like 5 elephants in the arena and started tossing javelins at them

>I bet he even thinks "orgies" were about sex

well sex orgies where about sex
food orgies where about food
it all depends on in what context the word is used

>he thinks any civilised nation had legal, fatal combat for entertainment

what is pride ufc
sure the main goal isent to kill but people have died doing it

Russian boxing ?
>>
>>277818
there's a documentary with louis theroux about entertainment wrestling, and it's pretty good

wrestlers are still very much athletes, they work out, they have to be huge and slim, and they have to do coordinated stunts, jumps, kicks and holds. The contact may be 'softened', and it is, but that doesn't remove the other physical requirements and demands from the job.

but his logic is fucking retarded, real sports have injuries on par or far worse.
