The reason for that is political,
By the time of the ascent of Macedon, Sparta and Thebes were the big bullies of Ancient Greece. Everyone else hated them as they were empire builders among the greek cities (as with Athens).
So one reason Philip and Alexander managed to conquer all of Greece at all was that they kept pushing the argument
"Come on, join us and we'll show those Spartans that we don't need them to run things".
Thus Sparta was left out of it. In fact, in Asia Minor, I forgot where right now - I think after one of the myriad of sieges they performed - they even sent a present to Athens with the pretext that they had avenged the burning of their temples during the persian wars. The letter attached to this read:
"From Alexander, king of all the greeks except for Sparta".
The point being that Sparta was NOT standing by the rest of Greece during this crusade against the east. (Sparta was historically a strong ally of Persia, as Persia paid Sparta to shake things up in Greece. everyone knew this)
