He gave Spain to Joseph and was overzealous with the Continental system. One or the other would have been managable, but fighting both Russia and committing troops to Spain to be led by less-than-stellar generals was very draining.

because there was no real plan to the invasion of Russia other than engage and annihilated the Russian army and force Alexander to reenter the continental system

as the Grand Armee advanced on Vilna, Vitebsk and eventually Smolensk without engaging the Russian Army, his Marshal's kept urging Napoleon to abandon the campaign. But he was determined to defeat Russia, as he believed if he were to abandoned the campaign Austria and Prussia would sense weakness and rise against him. again
The two armies finally met at Borodino and while the French were victorious, Napoleon failed to decisively defeat and destroy the Russian army. with this failure, Napoleon realised that the campaign was in tatters and occupied Moscow with the slight hope it might force Alexander to come to peace. But it didn't work, a fire burnt down Moscow and with no stores or winter provisions, the French had to leg it.

There were honestly a number of decisions throughout the campaign that could have salvaged the situation but stubbornness, poor decisions and misfortune made it almost ruinous

even then, Napoleon still could have won the following 6th coalition war if he had a bit more fortune or his marshals had been more competent

He could have easily won, just ignore Iberia and not Invade Russia. Now he has an extra 650000 Troops ready to fuck up Europe if need be. What he should have done is completely destroy Austria and spend the rest of his reign building a fleet to take on Britain

while Napoleon's operational planning is also to blame, poor generalship by many of the Marshals ruined a lot of opportunities for decsive victories in the 1813 campaign.

for example, if Ney had done is job of cutting off the allied line of retreat at Bautzen rather than getting entangled with the allied right flank, the allied army would have been annihilated.

That's not how you say Peninsular War
>>
>>269228

Nevermind that the French lost most of their army, a number of officers, destroyed French morale and much of their trained horses in Russia.

Peninsular war and Russian expedition both caused the downfall of the French but it's like the Western front vs the Eastern front in WW2. Both are significant but the other is the more important.

Bump for the greatest
>>
>>269260
1) France was fucking huge at the time. Even before the revolution, the French population was huge (in the 20s of millions). This made it significantly larger than any nation other than Russia. The introduction of the levee en masse during the revolution allowed France to tap into that manpower completely, and was why there was such a rapid growth in army size's during the era

2) Napoleon also levied troops from client and allied states. So Italy, members of the Confederation of the Rhine, the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, even Prussia and Austria, contributed to the army.
>>
>>269938
Actually in 1810 France had a higher population than Russia, close to 40,000,000
>>
>>270165
well shit, I didn't realise it was that huge. must have been thinking of a different period.

not surprisingly really, northern and western france had some great farmland
>>
>>269260
Heavy amounts of conscription, he occasionally called up people a year in advance, couple that with forced contributions from other states and you get a large force going. The logistics side of things was depots all over Europe garrisoned by troops.
>>
>>269260
He needed an army that big to keep Europe in line, but the problem with an army that huge was the logistics and upkeep. To sustain an army that large he needed all the extra ground and conquering, and massive public support. Thus he got caught in an economy of war with so much resources being stuck in it and all. There's a lot to find on the subject if you dig into it, interesting stuff really. There was a historian who compared it to the American military spendings today, i don't know what he said exactly (or who he was), but it's nice stuff to read about.

40 millions was France population in 1939
In early 19th century, they had around 28 millions
It was still more than most of European countries though
But not more than several big European countries combined, which is why Napoleon was almost always outnumbered in battle regardless
