Was the French Revolution a positive or negative event (on France, on Europe, on liberty)?

It was the worst thing that ever happened.

The ever memorable and blessed revolution, which swept a thousand years of villainy away in one swift tidal wave of blood — one: a settlement of that hoary debt in the proportion of half a drop of blood for each hogshead of it that had been pressed by slow tortures out of that people in the weary stretch of ten centuries of wrong and shame and misery the like of which was not to be mated but in hell.

There were two Reigns of Terror, if we would but remember it and consider it: the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death on ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the horrors of the minor Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty and heartbreak? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror, which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over, but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.

Negative. It brought more poisonous politicians and Jews to power in Europe, in addiditon to causing a better government to wither away.
>>
>>427636
Negative, it was the birth of modern leftism.

Great. Don't let reactionaries tell you otherwise. They'll twist facts and words in order to support their desire to be cucked by the monarch.

More people died in 9/11, than in the entirety of the Inquisition.

Dumbass.

French Revolution is the single worst event in European history after the fall of Rome

It is the point at which everything starts going wrong for Europe

The irony is that the revolutionaries themselves ended up under the guillotine, what am I even doing, like you don't know pretty much every revolution ends up in a failure. American revolution is the one exception and then again you could argue whether it was a proper revolution to begin with.

i have no strong feelings about the revolutionaries themselves one way or the other, im just happy to know that enlightment thinking fought and survived to this day

>MUH HORRIBLE INQUISITION

Yet another post-revolutionary revisionist horseshit, on par with "everyone in the middle ages believed the Earth was flat" and "every peasant was cucked by the king on a wedding night."
>>
>>427884
just a wee bit of death and torture, no biggie
>>
>>427843

Raw numbers don't matter. It's the quality of the people who were killed that matters.

100 nobles being executed for nothing is far more heinous than 10,000 peasants dying in a revolution.
>>
>>427848
Um, lol no. The fall of Rome wasn't actually that bad.

The Empire had grown extremely corrupt and depleted of its resources. It wasn't so much as a violent fall, but a much needed "transformation" into more decentralized kingdoms. These "barbarian" kings who'd become the future monarchs of Europe were able to govern their domains much more effectively than the nepotistic governors of the emperor. The rise of the church also ended slavery, opened countless universities, and began the idea of separating religion from interference by the state.

*tips monocle*
>>
>>427892
>just a wee bit of made up shit

Yeah don't forget anon:

Hundreds of thousands of innocents died because of inquisition, mostly because they were believed to be witches.

Nobles had a right to rape every peasant girl on her wedding night, who wouldn't want to remove those assholes? Are you a monarchist cuck?

Every single royal ever was inbred while the peasants were the pinnacle of gene diversity.

Everyone believed the Earth is flat. If you dared to mention it was round, you got burned at the stake. For being a witch.

Nobody took baths, ever. Everyone walked around coated in pig shit until the enlightement philosophers invented hygiene.

All in all only a retard wouldn't want to remove the filthy, and we rational gentlemen enligthened by our own intelligence are no retards *tips powdered wig*

Even worse.

>we'll remove the aristocracy!
>and then we'll emulate them!

Problem with the French Revolution is that it became a quasi-religious one. As much as the Revolutionaries like have claimed, any shred of "enlightenment" was discarded once it turned into a zealous, emotional and irrational bloodbath.

The attempt to decentralise thought and reasoning failed and in place of the Old Regime, came a new, fearsome force, the nation-state. One that centralised all thought and reasoning and censored and doctored things it didn't agree with.

Holy shit you're fucking retarded. Marx and Engels were fucking geniuses of their time, and developed an entirely new level of socio-economic study. The left hasn't made any serious intellectual advancement after them because it's not possible after these men were so unequivocally right about human society.

I wish you guys could pull your heads out of your asses for a second and accept that Marx was literally right about everything. It's just embarrassing to still disagree at this point.

Everything was going great for Europe between the French revolution and German unification. German unification was the real beginning of the end.

If you can't identify the quote, you have no business in history.

The positive benefit was that it greatly centralized and streamlined French bureaucracy, and scared the rest of Europe from accepting radical populism.
Also, when talking about the French Revolution, everyone forgets about the decade of war that event sparked.

That Twain quote is retarded, he advocates looking at the big picture and not just the single revolutionary event, yet in the big picture, that revolution caused things like:

>socialist/communist movement
Literally dozens of millions of victims all in the name of ending class differences and inequality

>nation state
Napoleonic wars, several nationalist revolutions, Franco-Prussian war, WW1, WW2, Yugoslav wars, you name it

It's understandable, because Twain couldn't foresee to which direction would all revolutionary this monstrosity eventually spin, but to think TODAY that he was right is beyond laughable.
>>
Negative. It was a natural consequence of absolutism that was even more corrupted. Spanish Habsburg monarchy is where it's at, every town ruling itself by its own Cabildo while the king made the federal law and supervised the kingdom. Sadly Charles II became king and everything went to shit..
>>
>>428189
I think you're being an obtuse reactionary for no reason. He's talking about the reason why revolution is justified to begin with and calling out the hypocrisy of idiots balking at the "violence" of the terror but the vaster violence that justifies it. And it was justified, fuck your monarchs and tsars and aristocracies.
>>
>>428246
That's exactly what I'm getting at, the chain of events triggered by the revolution had a higher death toll in just 200 years than anything that happened in the previous 1000. You're basically saying LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE while ignoring the big picture yourself.
>>

It didn't really even "fall" properly until Islam started sacking the entire near east and eastern med.
