"Gradual evolution of the South's economy" was what everyone outside the south wanted. It was what the slaveholding class feared, hated and started a war over.
It's why they constantly sought to expand the economic domination of the slave economy, into new territories, and looked to conquer elsewhere including Nicaragua and Cuba, to keep the system going.
