Mithraism as one of the systems of belief which originated from Zoroastrian doctrines. Of Persian origin, Mithraism flourished in Ancient Rome and elsewhere, and was considered a "mortal enemy" of early Christianity. So many parallels existed between the two, as much in doctrines as in practices, that the early Christians, on becoming ascendant, took every measure possible to eliminate all traces of Mithraism. They destroyed the Mithraic temples, and violently eliminated the priests and adherents of Mithraism wherever they found them. It is therefore somewhat surprising to find that so many Mithraic beliefs and rituals were conveniently emulated( purloined ?) by their early Christian rivals, e.g. the use of bread and wine , forms of dress such as the mitre, etc

I like how no one argues the historicity of Zoroaster, despite his dates varying between centuries, meanwhile Christ's, whose dates vary 5 years on either side, is constantly scrutinized.

It would seem that there is less to nail down Zoroaster than Jesus. But I've never once hear someone bother questioning his existence. It could be that, with Zoroaster just being a prophet rather than the Son Of God, his existantial status isn't quite as important.
