What is your favorite Italian city state?
>>
Venice
>>
Piedmont/Savoy.

I like how they became known as the land of backstabbing diplomats as they were seen by both the HRE and France as their puppet and just had to choose the side that would not kill them.

My family is from Trieste though.

Pisa was the cutest city-state. They started out as a contender, but they ended up as Florence's bitch. They bungled up their tower, too. They're the Weegee of Italy.

So many of them are wonderful, but it has to Venice doesn't it? What could possibly compare?
>>
Can anyone spoon feed me Milan during that era? I actually know every little about it.

On the OP: I believe it's Florence. being the center of the Italian renaissance it fully expressed what Italians are capable of and just feel like the 'most Italian' to me, if that makes sense.

Venice was quite important to but I mostly remember it for it's trading influence.

Venice because it triggers the Byzantophiles.

Thanks to the Mafia it was probably one of the only places in Europe (in the past) where the working class could rise. I don't know why but i've always loved the idea of meritocracy
>>
>>16358
Papal States are GOAT. Venice is runner up.
>>
Venice. Both a functioning republic and the greediest backstabbers around. /pol/s image of the Jews has nothing on the (quite Christian, if loving money more than the Pope) Venetians.
>>
Milan of course. Its not like they backstabbed anyone.

Pisa and Sienna are standout performers.

A city-state opposed to the HRE that morphed into a dynastic state under the Visconti and then the Sforza condotierris, which was invaded into the Italian Wars and ultimately became part of the Habsburg Empire.

You know nothing of the wiles of the Venetians. Their crowning achievement was the 4th crusade, for which they were excommunicated to a fucking man. And that was simply a particularly egregious example of their usual bullshit.

It's Croatian, it was an independent republic but it's population consisted of Croatians unlike some cities in Dalmatia and Istria which had a mixed Italian/Croatian population.

unfortunately, with the exception of rome, florence and venice, most scholarship on the other renaissance city-states is in Italian. Its especially ashame that Milan is not the focus of anglo-american scholarship because it was a huge played in italian renaissance politics baka senpai

I agree, and I think that the existence of ancient micronations in europe, was planned by many states to have areas to do buffer affairs. From a logical point of view is a non sense, because is accepting that a little country that talk your language, with people that have a job in your country, married with people of your country, that receive all resources for survival from your country, that share laws, etc... can have citizen with a different treatment only because are a different country de jure but not de facto.
