France had many swiss mercenaries on hire for protection duty, even in times of peace.

There was no time of peace.
The thirty year war was utterly apocalyptic and the most dangerous and horrible thing you could encounter as a peasant or civilian were dismissed mercenaries/Landsknechte who needed money and food because they blew their money on fancy cloth and gambling (As was totally logically because they could die everyday) and the food was scarce because so mayn people died that fieldwork was disrupted in many places.
Dehumanisation and roving bands of raiders searching for human prey or another warlord or passing army to offer their skills were the result.
