An overview of history tells us that there is always a trend towards some central ideal and that 'centralism' or stability (stagnation) rarely wins out. Comparing societies between the centuries makes it possible to identify the zeitgeist that defined the momentum of nations.

What ideal is the West trending towards nowadays? How will this transform societies over the next century?

I wish I could give you an answer, but really hard to tell at this point

Just look how much the west changed in the past 15 years

>What ideal is the West trending towards nowadays?

International companies gaining more and more economic power and becoming independent political actors, just like states.

Tarifs gradually dissapearing, states that stay out of the common markets lose their competitive edge.

Loyalty to companies grows into a force compareble to nationalism.

Democracies move further to just the tyranny of the masses: states disregarding human rights, privacy, due process etc., as politicians figure out that the avarage Joe doesn't really care about these things and they can get away with abusing rights and breaking laws and still get elected, they just need to whip up the uneducated masses with some populistic narratives. Democracy only remains in the sense that there will be elections (pretty much already happened in the USA).

People who value such rights will advocate for a limited democracy, where you would have to pass some criteria to vote, seeing no other way to break the power of populistic parties.

What was the last ideal it was trending towards? See if you can come to an agreement on that.
