Does efficiency exist or is it just an abstract we use to try to place ourselves above taking sides?

Efficiency is quantifiable.
But in most cases, you quantify earnings instead of efficiency.
There is also the cost of automation. If the cost is low compared to the cost of hire workers, you could automate something.
It means there might be 2 workers and some machines instead of 8 workers. Which also means those 2 workers each have a higher net worth compared to the 8 workers, which do increase their "productivity".
