Why did spain not conquer this country ?
They attempted to through conflict and dynastic marriages however Portugal was always culturally distinct from the casteillians and the Portuguese as a general rule wanted to remain independent. Since the 16th century though; England supported Portugal against any desputes with the Spanish so as to counter further Spanish power in Europe. TLDR: Spain tried but In the end complete subjugation wasn't worth the cost in money, manpower and face in the Europe political spectrum.
It tried, but it failed everytime. They managed to do it between 1580 and 1640 because the portugal king was a teenager obsessed with fighting the moors, so he went to northern africa with an army, got defeated and killed without having an heir.
