Did European explorers honestly believe their actions were the fulfillment of some divine obligation instigated by church policy like the doctrine of discovery?

If no, is there any evidence of criticism from 15th century contemporaries that such policy was just justification for greed or power?

If yes, do the beliefs held by a society justify their actions? Is it fair to criticism them?

When do Europeans cross the line from well-intended expansionism into the current narrative of "greedy, Machiavellian imperialists?"
