Not to mention the whole fiasco with Typhoon Cobra that cost the lives of over 800 of his men and 146 aircraft. Halsey's incompetence was pretty deadly.
All of the American admirals in WW2 are pretty overrated. Most of the major USN victories of the war were really due to superior intelligence, superiority of numbers, blind luck, and sheer incompetence by the Japanese.
