Even our formal invitation to join is an 'invitation to petition' where afterward it can still be denied even though you were invited, its a loophole. Every mason asks to be one even if they're tricked into asking.

To be honest as a Freemason in America it's basically a place for protestants to experience and practice rituals with higher meaning, using symbols and icons with deep philosophical allusions, and otherwise engage in a friendly and strongly-knit group of people that value virtue. Sure you can be a muslim or a buddhist or a OTO member and join, but probably 95% of American masons are either protestant or just vaguely deistic.
A lot of what you can get from the Catholic or Orthodox church is missing from protestant churches, but the spiritual yearning is still there and can be superficially satisfied by Freemasonry.
