Most of the people sacrified were captured enemy soldiers m8,death should be expected if you're a soldier, it's not like they fucking kidnapped their own civilians and killed them.
>>
Maybe some did, maybe most, but definitely not all thought it was a good idea. For sure many "Aztecs" didn't sacrifice people, and looked down on sacrifice in general, like the Texcoco state, north of Tenochtitlan, the economic and political capital of the Aztec empire. The Texcocoan had a philosophy against sacrifice, but still allowed animal sacrifices, but were even starting to question that. Their philosophy and cultural gained the admiration and respect of the Spanish, even.

Also, there's another purpose for sacrifice that people tend to overlook, aside from military control, population control. The Mexica, the military power of the Aztec and founders of Tenochtitlan, were somewhat similar to Nazis, in that they believed that they had the divine right to conquer Mexico and eventually the world, that they were chosen by their God to rule being the best race, and that everyone else must pay tribute to their empire. At least, that's what some of the people in power in government thought in Tenochtitlan, but even there people disputed their system, just like any state does. Pic related

Apparently a lot of them actually chose to be sacrificed, and basically partied every day for a year until their deaths.

I'd love to have seen what their modern state would have looked like if the spanish settled for trading posts as in the original plan.

I thought Nahuatl was their language, and they actually refered to themselves as the Mexica.

The Aztecs were cool. We should bring back human sacrifice and adopt their trapezoidal architecture.
>>
>>278068
The inhabitants of Tenochtitlan referred to themselves as the Mexica, but it was only them. In general, the people of central Mexico at the time were known as the Nahuatl, because it was the language they all spoke.

Fun fact, King Charles V ordered the language of New Spain to be Nahuatl, but Cortez and friends decided to stick with Spanish.

Imagine, modern day Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, all speaking Nahuatl today.

There was one god... I think toxcatl. His "sacrifice" would represent him for a year, be granted four wives, lavish luxuries, but he'd have to go around the city playing his music. On the last day he'd walk up the temple and throw a little ceramic or bone flute on each step, crush it beneath his feet and move up until he reached the top where he was sacrificed.
>>
>>278034
More precisely Nahua, the name of the language is Nahuatl.

Whether the sacrifices were evil or not is what's "debatable", but for sure the sacrifices were not universally accepted. Who knows what really happened, but there was definitely violence and grotesque, macabre shit going on in Mesoamerica during their different periods of civilization. No different from other humans in general.. weren't there heads on a stick in London bridges still by the 19th century?

But Spanish came to eventually become the language of all those countries because of what happened in Mexico. King Charles intended for the conquered lands to have the same language as the native people, but as he understood Nahuatl was the only language worthy/worthwhile of administrating

The Aztecs didn't believe the world would end without sacrifices, they believed the forces in the world would unbalance and bring chaos.
>>
>>278180
Spanish became the official language because the Viceroyals, the military, the colonists, and basically everyone else Spain-related spoke Spanish. I don't see how you could introduce one language in that magnitude, and then try to force both sides to speak some language from Mesoamerica

I disagree with the picture because skulls were not considered just as ornaments, each of them had a meaning in their art.
This is a sculpture of the God of death, the liver stands out as the organ of life.

That's a light way of saying "anarchists and communists the world over have put him to the index for thoroughly rekting any kind of organized revolutionary theory while moralists and assortite conservatives refuse to read him because they think he's the arch-anarchist".
>>
>>278284
It's just aztec inspired, not meant to be accurate. I know skulls were symbols of fertility and growth to the aztecs, following the general theme of opposite being complimentary rather than competitive like in abrahamic faiths.

>This is a sculpture of the God of death, the liver stands out as the organ of life.

I saw that sculpture of Mictlantecuhtli, or a replica of it, at the melbourne museum with a friend. Taller than I expected. We thought the organ was a flower at first. The description said his hands were raised to aggressively rip apart the dead when they entered Mictlan.
>>
>>278365
The flower perception is interesting, makes sense considering that in Nahuatl the flower was used in a similar way as the word aesthetic.
For example the word for poetry was 'In Cuicatl In Xochitl' which means 'The Singing and the Flower'.

Half of those countries never spoke nahuatl and never belonged to New Spain. New Spain doesn't mean spanish america, that was the Reinos the Indias, which included between two and four viceroyalties (New Spain being the first) and a shitload of "kingdoms" under them.

New Spain is just Greater Mexico. So Mesoamerica, central america, the caribbean and all those ex-spanish states of the USA. Those would be the ones speaking nahuatl (except probably in the USA).

>b-but the Americans thought the Japanese wouldn't surrender if they didn't nuke the two cities and firebomb 60 of their largest cities and intentionally kill civilians
>>
>>281349
It was basically Viceroyalty of New Spain = Aztec Empire and then becoming spanish north america as they expanded. And Viceroyalty of Peru = Inca Empire and then becoming spanish south america as they expanded.

Later mostly with the Bourbons south america was divided between three viceroyalties, the already existing Peru plus Nueva Granada and Río de la Plata. There were also Capitanías Generales that worked as autonomous regions from this viceroyalties under military government, for example Chile, Cuba or Venezuela.

(btw, the map is not exact, for example it was the already independent south americans who arrived that far south. But it's simple and serves my explanation well).

would be better than them all speaking spanish, but why would anyone south of guatemala speak nahuatl? they could speak pipil, a language related to nahuatl, as far south as nicaragua though.
>>
>>281444
Yes they would have. There was only a small but very vocal group in the military leadership that didn't want to surrender.

Most of the rest were scared to death of an invasion from the soviets.

Japan was already working on a surrender when the bombs fell. The US just spread propaganda that the Japs had no interest in surrender and would fight to the death because they didn't want to waste years worth of work on the atom bombs and wanted to flex on the rest of the world.
