He has an archeology degree though. Even though archeologists find a lot fo weapons, we have very little idea on how they use them. Reconstructing them, trying them out in enacted fights can actually give you some ideas about that, it's probably more useful then trying to find it out from chronicles and artwork (which were mostly created by people who weren't fighters, most of them probably never saw a battle). Look up experimental archaeology for further info.

This is not easy. Well, sidestepping is. Closing in safely, not so much.
Let us assume that he is using a spear one handed, with a shield. This shares many techniques with sword and buckler, such as keeping your two weapons close to each other. You use small jabs, rather than full force thrusts. It is also laughably easy to pivot step in order to bring your point on-line again if he tries to sidestep. A full lunge, yes, that you can sidestep and it is difficult for the spear user to recover, but that is why lunging is a thing you do only when you know you will kill your opponent and remain safe.
A spear in two hands would allow you to perform wide swinging arcs as well, because a spear is a staff with a pointy bit and staff techniques work just as well with a spear. As for thrusts, it is even easier to bring your point on-line should he sidestep, given the extra control you have.
