Hayes was brought in to arbitrate the new borders, and he gave Paraguay more territory than they were holding at the time. So Hayes is widely admired in Paraguay, while virtually unknown as a President in the US.

About the argentine interest in the war, I can said that Mitre, that moment president, used the war to eliminate the confederate oposition. Argentina was recently unified, after a seventy years civil war, so Mitre uses the war to militarize the provincials states. Also was a oportunity to intervene in Paraguay and Uruguay´s politic, putting a favorable goverment.
