Did the Cuban revolutionaries know that building socialism would kill Cuba's tourist economy and turn them into a pariah among Latin American countries?
Did they care?

No they probably didn't understand that. Either way most of them were probably fucked in the end.

Nice meme

Cuban revolutionaries turned to socialism because they pissed off the big US of A, so they needed a big new friend, the soviets.
In the beginning Castro wasn't a communist.

It's really funny how rightists on this board can never provide an actual critique of socialism, like it's either "no no no socialism is BAD" or it's some kind of incoherent ramble about the Jews

This is the premise. After the Spanish American War, American industry flooded Cuba and dominated the market. You had some Cuban competition and some Cubans working with the Americans but really the revolution was about taking back "their Cuba" from people like Hershey and Meyer Lansky. So they were quite aware of the consequences as places like the casinos became their target.
An interesting tidbit which I have to pry more details from: as land was being redistributed, allegedly an ancestor was a veteran of the Spanish American war (his uniform on display in a Meuseum over there) owned a plantation. Castro out of respect toward the military and his service did not touch his lands until after his death.

More like, the USA pissed them off. Castro was cool with liberalism and Che probably would have settled for a Yugoslavia scenario, but Washington's lukewarm reception to the revolution (including a refusal to meet with Fidel in Washington) pushed the Cuban leadership toward Moscow.

Yes, obviously both sides were "pissed off".
