as for him in power, he was a guy who knew exactly what needed to be done, but didn't care much for the means to achieve something as long as the result was sufficient.
just from an objective point of view he did transform Russia from revolutionary state to Superpower, but the cost to do that was absolutely immense, and easily would have broken any other nation bar China.
