Nationalism means a political movement which strive for national sovereignty. Before the French Revolution, the sovereign was a king and the idea of the political nation had not been fully developed in the modern sense.
Some people take this to mean that ethnic identity, patriotism, group loyalty and even nations themselves are modern concepts but this is bullshit.
Nations weren't nearly monolithic enough for nationalism prior to modernity. They were composed of myriad distinct cultures with very different versions of the language, who had rivalries so strong they often warred with each other. National culture had to become far more standardized for nationalism to be possible.
