Cubism sped the development of other avant-garde movements of the early 20th and popularized the idea of exploring (graphic, 2-dimensional) to the fullest with very unique techniques.

I think, however, futurism developed a more pleasing aesthetic than cubism did, although I think that its ideological influences, which were primarily fascist, rightist and pro-war, held back its development. This is not because of them being fascist, rightist or pro-war, but rather because ideology holds back the potential creativity of art for art's sake (such as cubism or fauvism) and furthermore, alienated futurism from the rest of the primarily leftist avant-garde art world.
This is a useful diagram for understanding the development of early 20th century art, I think.
