What if the Americans lost the war for independence? Would they have just tried another war or gone the Canada approach?

It's hard to figure how they'd lose without securing at least some privileges. Even if the continental army gets crushed, Washington gets hanged, etc. you're still talking about trying to occupy a country that's some 30 times the size of England at least. Just the cost of sending a thin leaven of troops to keep an eye on everything would be much more than the 13 colonies were worth.

Two ways this could happen
1. Parliament issues an apology and gives the colonists representation in parliament.
2. The colonies, now devastated from an exceedingly long war, concede defeat and become easy prey in their weakened state to Indian raids. British North America becomes an economic backwater as it never expands past the Appalachians.
