Did Atlantis exist?
>>
Plato himself wrote that Atlantis is a thought experiment.

The whole legend of Atlantis is a meme spread by retards who never bothered to read the original source.

Does thought experiment mean real?

Yes, have you ever heard of Thermopylae? Well in history it's supposed to be the location where the Spartans and allies fought off a bunch of Persians, but the site of the actual battle was during the Peloponnesian war. Now I know what you're thinking, Thucydides clearly recorded the events of the Peloponnesian war, and there were no Persians in it (at least, not invading Greece). But what you didn't realize was that Thucydides was actually Plato after all, and he was actually Socrates. You see, it's pretty certain that Socrates was a hydromancer/spiritual teacher who could control water. You can tell that due to the fact that he always professes a "method" (read: "water"). Therefore, he should be immune to poison. So why did he "die" when he drank hemlock? Well, the most likely solution is that he actually didn't die, and went on to assume the identity of Plato, and then later Thucydides. He seems to have discovered a lot of things through Atlantean waterbending/hydromancing before his "death" by forced suicide, which probably altered his DNA so he would live longer than the usual human lifespan. In any case, the Atlantis story by Plato is meant to reveal the scientific-spiritual advances he made, but they had to remain secret in order to survive until today...

Yes, it was an island continent in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean who's civilizations colonized much of the world before it sank.
>>
I like to think the Sea Peoples were from Atlantis.
>>

Yeah, the conquistadors actually stopped on the last remaining part of the continent which had remained above the surface, but that sank shortly after they stopped there. All written accounts are lost of that discovery though, because the Spaniards were afraid it was a supernatural trick. Also, there were a lot of legends on Iceland and the Canary Islands about Atlantis, but the conquistadors eliminated all of them when they made the connection, so there were never any records of that discovery either, which is unfortunate because the islanders had a lot of detailed information about the continent such as where to find the last remaining underwater structures. However, since all the records and tales were wiped out by the conquistadors, we don't really have any physical evidence for it, apart from Plato/Thucydides, and the fact that the Aztecs tried to emulate Atlantis by building Tenochtitlan on Lake Texcoco.

It was real in his mind.
>>

Well, the reason it's banned to talk about Atlantis in school (you might think it's because it's too hard to understand) is actually because it would potentially give students the ability to resist lesson plans in history class. Then if your teacher tried to make you do push ups for "attitude" then you could Hydrobend your will into a more clear force that would force logic into her head, allowing you to win the argument. The fact is, Plato couldn't have lived as long as they say he did without some hydrokinesis involved, and that would require Atlantis to be an island continent in the Atlantic. If you think about it, that really explains a lot of different phenomena, such as the prevalence of humans with different racial characteristics on different parts of the world, but all the humans in the Native Americas had the same skin pigmentation. It's due to the Atlanteans settling their continent much more recently than previously though, and civilizations like Aztec, Mayan, and Incan arose so quickly due to the residue of Atlantean techno-knowledge storage.

True story, Hitler as well as many other Nazi occultists LITERALLY believed that Atlantis was were the ancient aryans initially lived before their """""""continent"""""" sunk into the ocean. They believed that Aryans migrated across western europe first (obviously) before making their way across Asia Minor, Central Asia and then finally settling in India. They also believed the reason Indians weren't awesome like them (despite India contributing tons of shit to human progress like steel alloys among countless other things) was because the Aryans race mixed too much and enforced their caste system much too late to save their racial purity.

So naturally they believed the Germanics, who did literally fuck all for most of recorded history until 1800 A.D., were the closest in racial purity to the Ancient Atlanteans progenitors, despite the Ancient Aryans almost certainly originating (and still there to this day) in Modern day Iran.

I am literally not making this up, check for yourselves if you don't believe me. They sincerely believed this shit or some various iterations of it. Nazis were fascinated by "Indian" culture but only in a really superficial sense kinda like a weeaboo. Some still believed that pure Aryan specimens remained among the highest echelons of the caste system. They even sent at least 1 """"""""""""scientific""""""""" expedition (mostly just pseudo-scientific shit like measuring bullshit phenotypical traits such as skull size and nose length) to investigate the possible linkage to the Indian and German people.

Nazis were LITERALLY the "WE WUZ KANGS" of their day.

Are you fucking retarded? Fuck off with this "le Minoans wer epic cuz dey hav boob shirts xDDD" meme. Nobody has gives a shit about the Minoans except for autists
>>
>>1365205
The Minoan were the main civilization in the area and preceded the Greeks that own a lot to them
>>
>>1365205

There is a ton of evidence for the "Crete was Atlantis" position, starting with the tsunami that devastated Crete and ending in the thallasocracy that Minoan Crete exerted over the mainland. Even the dates and distances attributed to Solon measure up, /if/ you divide them all by 10. Not only is it quite believable that Plato or Solon might have exaggerated the numbers, it's also true that the Egyptian glyphs for "10" and "100" are similar enough for it to be a genuine translation error.

Meanwhile, there is exactly ZERO evidence supporting any other theory of where Atlantis was, so it's pretty clear which of us is in fact retarded.

>>1365205
Memes and ridicule are not a substitutes for a proper argument, anon
>>
>>1365236
Okay, that actually sounds reasonably believable. Plato did mention hearing of Atlantis through a friend who claimed he heard while he was in Egypt, IIRC. Been fucking ages since I've read the Republic so I may have just made that up but I could see Plato fucking up the logistics.

That doesn't make any sense. In Plato's story (assuming he was actually convey what he thought was historically true and not an allegory) he states that Atlantis existed 9000 years before his time before many deluges came and went and destroyed many civilizations (except for Egypt for some reason) off the map. It was far canonically far before the Achaean time. Not only that, but he states at various points that it was located past the Pillars of Heracules, and that they supposedly spoke a complete different language than the Athenians and only got as far as subjugating the Western Mediterranean up until Italy before Athens came in to the rescue to save the ungrateful Greek world. If it was supposed to convey a conflict between the Minoans and Crete, why didn't he make any reference to it in his Minos dialogue (which is about how great Minos was and the popular tales from Attic tragedians about how savage he was is lies) or in Laws where it's not mention by Clinias of Cnossus or the Athenian stranger when they're pondering about how the ideal colony that Clinias is appointed to design for his home Cretan city is should ideally be, while they both pick the historical practices of their governments, and the governments around Greece and the world that they deemed desirable.

But like many have already stated, Plato subtley states both in the Republic, Timaeus, and Critias that it's make believe. The whole canonical praise of Athens of being the good guys in the Atlantis-myth is supposed to be ironic. His whole Menexemus dialogue is basically Socrates making fun of the patriotic Athenian orators of his day (such as Pericles) for actually believing that they alone saved Greece from the barbarian Persians and that the Ionians are the true pure Greek race and are noble.

>>1365275
Critias (Plato's uncle) who tells it in the dialogue, who says he heard from his grandfather Critias who heard it from Solon who heard it from an Egyptian priest.
>>
>>1365000

So you support the theory that Atlantis was where Azores archipelago currently is?
There are lots of other people who say Atlantiswas in other regions. Why do you back that theory?
>>
Plato is not a historian. Plato was hypothesizing "if this thing I heard of, somewhere, sometime happened toward us", we would be in a better position to represent ourselves in a consistent manner by benefit of a central authority, and here are the reasons...

It wasn't supposed to be an actual geography lesson, it was a nondescript factor of a potential strong aggressor toward the homeland.
>>
I've heard Atlantis actually stems from the late Bronze Age collapse, basically Plato was going "man just think if the Greek dark ages didn't happen."
>>
>>1367230
>9000 years
Heard on a documentary (a long time ago though so take it with a grain of salt) that those were 9000 lunar years or "egyptian" years, which were shorter than the solar year and revolved around the flooding phases of the Nile. It could've been a misinterpretation of the actual number, as this guy >>1365236 said.
>>
>>1367599
Ancient Egyptian year was 365 days long, I think the flooding thing only marked periods of the year.

But even if Plato was being serious with that his Uncle's grandfather once heard from Solon who heard from some Egyptian priest about the tale of Atlantis, and the part of it happening 9000 years ago is off from a translation error -- and that it was based off historical truth -- it still wouldn't change the fact that the time-setting must've happened a ridiculously long time ago, that, since then, the world and it's civilizations witnessed various cycles of destruction from deluges and rebuilt revivals that only Egypt was spared off and managed to keep records of such civilizations and past events, while it was eventually forgotten overtime elsewhere (like in Athens) by next illiterate generation who survived from living high enough in the mountains during it; which makes it completely unrealistic both retrospectively, and that of even from Plato's perspective.

Sure, you probably grasp for an excuse that MAYBE Plato was meaning the early Bronze age flooding that influenced the various creation myth in a lot of current cultures, but that doesn't overshadow the detail that Plato explicitly states and emphasizes that the setting of Atlantis occurs during a time since his that VARIOUS great deluges had occurred. Not just one. Plato was purposely playing with the fact that, even his time, people knew that each culture had it's deluge creation myth, and wanted to make a thought experiment that takes place far before a time even conceivable or imagined.

That's unlikely. Greeks of Plato's time or Plato himself didn't know about the Bronze Age collapse or the Greek Darks as we do. They didn't know that Phoenician alphabet that they used was only a couple hundred years old at their time, and that a couple hundred years before that, they used a wrote in what we know as Linear A and B. They didn't know that a bunch of major civilizations collapsed around a particular time that we know of and that it wasn't unusual. To them, 1100 - 800 BC wasn't that far off intellectually or technologically as it was now (aside from shit like chariots ceasing to be used because horses began to be big enough to ride effectively on horse-back in combat). There was a few (like Herodotus) who were autistic enough from counting the years of events that supposedly happen, to realize that past the 11-1000 bc mark, most of the mythical origin dates of the heros and events with the Gods started to cease to happen and that events concerning with mankind started to become more blander and not as exciting as the more distant past, but they didn't know they exactly had a Dark Age.

THIS IS SOME MILLITARY GRADE SHITPOSTING
>>
The earth's temperature has been rising for millennia, rising temperature is correlated with sea level rise. Humans have been around for way longer than recorded history. Large sections of land were previously above sea level that are now below sea level. There are numerous areas that could have been the site of ancient civilizations not known to history that in their day could have been bustling port cities.

Lots of civilizations include stories about a great flood, this correlates to rises in sea levels throughout history. The modern Mediterranean, caspian and black seas could have been suddenly filled with water in places where they weren't previously. I believe we need to do a lot more aquatic archaeology to look for these lost civilizations. It's not crazy to think they're out there, whether or not they are the same "Atlantis" described by Plato remains to be seen, but the concept of a prehistoric civilization is not crazy, there are numerous other civilizations we know almost nothing about that have been lost to time with nothing left but their ruins.

The closest thing would be the Mycenae people of Crete.
>>
>>1365132
You heard something completely wrong or misinterpreting. Hitler believed the ancient Aryans originated in Russia, north of the Caucasus in the Pontic Steppe region. This region used to encompass a large part of the Black Sea, until the Black Sea flooded around 6000bc , displacing the Indo-Europeans, causing them to adopt warfare techniques to survive, then conquering neighboring tribes and using them as slaves, much like the Mongol expansion. This conquering then spread out in waves forming the civilizations of old, leaving the myths of flooding and ancient sunken lands across the regions affected by Indo-European conquerors.

Also, I think Hitler believed that Scandinavians were the the purest Indo-Europeans, not the Germans of old, whom he knew were red haired celts(Tacitus's Germania). The interesting thing is, DNA evidence has revealed that Egyptian kings had red hair, and Celtic y-DNA, implying that celts are the closest related to the original Indo-European expansion.

There were no lost continents that spread civilization in the way it's come to mean.
Atlantis, Lemuria, Agartha, Schambala, Thule, Mu, Hyperborea and Aldebaran or anything with a solar wheel on it are literal memes.

The symbolism of luminous ancient astronauts/divers, flying machines, and deluges preceding the civilization of antiquity are superficial vestiges of normal, mundane mythic cosmogony. The fact that African and Australian peoples lack these myths are also superficial coincidences, from the mundane geological divergence of human migrations.
