What exactly made John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough such a great military commander? I hear people talk about him like he was one of the greatest commanders to ever live. What did he do to warrant such respect? Did he have any equals in the time period? Eugene? Spinola?

he repeatedly strategically and tactically outmaneuvered his opponents beating them so badly that the french king once thanked one of his later generals for not having lost as badly as his predecessors.

and he did this while having to manage a multinational coalition with competeing objectives and requirements.

he was a master of marching and logistics and won most of his battles by fairly crushing exchange rates

blenheim he had 52000 men and 66 guns against 56000 and 90 guns and took losses of 4500 killed and 8000 wounded for french losses of 20000 casualties and 14190 captured

Ramillies with a slight force advantage saw him take less than 4000 total casualties for the loss of 19000 french troops.

as for equals eugene of savoy was the closest and they worked together often but Eugene considered churchill to be the better commander

What exactly made Eugene great then? And why was he perhaps not as good as Churchill?

similar tactical skill, similar stratiegic skill, slightly less vision and boldness

What did tactics and strategy of this time period really look like? Like what did they do on both fronts that was so revolutionary?

Eugene was considered an aggressive maniac, his main skills involved attacking whatever and whenever Marlborough told him too.

Was eugene actually cucked by Marlborough like that? Why exactly did Napoleon hold Eugene so high but not Marlborough?
