They were a very early offshoot from Indo-Europeans. The mummies that have been found became more mongoloid and less caucasoid over time hinting a replacement.

When in history the Uyghurs were limited to the few city-states they claimed from the Indo-Iranians in the Tarim, like the Kingdom of Khotan for example. Xinjiang was the creation of the Qing Dynasty following the victory of versus the Dzungars in which the conquered Uyghurs were lumped with some western provinces, which includes shitloads of non-uyghurs such as Han Chinese, Hui, and Mongols.
