to what extent does philosophy influence politics? Plato, obviously, but he's almost more like a political theorist at that point. Same with Locke. Do politicians ever actually acknowledge the work of other philosophers?

Look, if philosophy is love of wisdom, and wisdom is a supreme good, of course it
improves anything if well done.

Depends on the politician

During the cold war, the USSR was driven by Ideology whereas the US was driven by interests

I figured the US was driven to prevent the rise of communism. I guess in that case they are driven by philosophy as well.

Part of my question though is does Marx really count? He was proposing a new form of government, so doesn't that make him a political theorist? Where is this line?

Philosophy is method, politics is means.

Nowadays don't influence, philosophy is dead and we have killed him.

isn't political theory a branch of philosophy anyway?

Plato didn't think Philosophizers and Politicians could be the same. He says this multiple times throughout his dialogue. There's one (I think Euthydemus or Protagoras or some other Sophist-oriented dialogue) where he goes as far as saying they're very distinct from each other. He hints that anyone whose interested in philosophy should abandon hopes with getting into politics.

The whole bits in his Republic about the Guardians and Philosophizer king are self-noted oxymorons that are only thought up to explain how justice works in a modular place, not instructions for how States should be run.
