What were medieval politics like?
Local politics were generally either a struggle between king and church, or between king and lords.

Lots of political marriages

Or between kings and other kings. Damn kings, they ruined kingship.
It depended on where you were and on what level you were operating.
On the geolpolitical scale there was a desire for treasure among lords and Kings, so you would find the King tying to plan a campaign with which they could acquire treasure (or even better, land)
Lords were fickle however, and would oftentimes abandon the campaigns planned if the risk was too great.
On local scales you'll see there be temporal-religious conflicts, especially over whether or not a clergyman charged with a crime would be judged by the sheriff/king or by his fellow clergymen.
This was mostly the case in Western Europe, in central Europe (the Holy Roman Empire) the politics were very different.
You had issues like the investiture controversy, whether the Emperor gets to name bishops or the Pope, and always a succession crisis every couple generations where the different lords of the Empire just couldn't seem to agree on who should be their king (let alone if the Pope will crown him Emperor)
Going further east you have Byzantine Politics which are well, byzantine.
