They exist because they're a consequence of how all the physical forces and matter and whatnot in the universe ended up interacting together, they just naturally arose like anything else.

Intelligence gave us an edge over other species, its the reason we survived so long, besides its not like we made a choice to be intelligent, we just are, we evolved that way.

We can be said to be the universe in the sense that everything in the universe is made of the same basic stuff, including us, and the post you're quoting specified that intelligence CAN be detrimental, not that it always is.

Just because we have it doesn't mean we are this human idea of better than other species'. If your judgement of 'good' is length of species survival then there are many, many many MANY more species out there which are 'better' than humans.
And you are kidding yourself if mutually assured destruction is not a possibility. Name another species which can willingly and consciously destroy itself and it's species.
