The french. And by the french I don't only mean the country of France but also the retarded family they put in the throne of Spain and still continues to rule.

Partly spanish fault too of course. The french killed those faggots and even though they were expelled from Spain several times we allowed them to return. I'm not even strictly republican, but this dynasty is just awful. We should have stayed with Pepe Botella, who cares about some madrileƱos being killed for chimping out?

This is a big one, along with most nobles being exempt from tax causes serious disparity.

I imagine it was quite hard starting up a business in Spain considering usury was illegal allowing for no real loan potential, the only way a commoner could really make an income was serving in the military which was a really rough life and if you survived you might as well serve as a mercenary, and there was so much silver inflation you'd be hard pressed to afford even the rent for market space in a town square.

To be honest, poverty amongst nobles was rampant since they could not work. It's not that they were not allowed by law if I'm not wrong, but socially it wasn't accepted. The bulk of the nobility, the hidalgos with barely anything more than the title and maybe some land in the middle of nowhere, would've suffered a lot if they had to pay taxes.

Spain was a weird civilization in the XVI and XVII centuries

Over 10% of the adult population was made of virgins who didnt work, nuns, monks and priests.
they were at war all the time often simultaneously against many great powers,be it Turks, English, French, Dutch, Swedes.

The population fell in that period for 4 resons
A lot of religious virgins who didnt fuck
men who died in wars
men who emmigrated to the americas
and the last expulsion of the moors

they were the last really religious western power, they became decadent because of their extreme catholic values, the huge number of hidalgos who refused to work, the demographic disaster, the hyperinflations and bankrupcies, and the retarded inbred Habsburg kings.

the current problem they have is their economy isnt competitive enough for their currency (the euro), if they still had the peseta then they would have had a huge devaluation when the spanish property bubble busted, and now the crisis would be over, but they cant do that anymore since EU countries arent fully sovereign in economic issues.
The European Union also benefits them in some other ways, it isnt a 100% bad thing for them.

For example? It seems like ruining the national industry just to enter would be enough to justify how was a mistake. Economically at least.

they gifted Spain billions of dollars every year for decades to modernize themselves, with the idea that once Spain would be wealthy, and it would be them who would donate money to develop Romania or Bulgaria.

And if they had the peseta, the spaniards with jobs would have lower real income, and stuff like oil imports would be more expensive.

Guerra Civil was one crucial turning point.

Southern Europeans are just inherently terrible with finance. They went bankrupt twice within a few decades of plundering and mining an unfathomable amount of gold and silver. They spent it all on the church, wars for the Habsburgs, and silk and spices from Asia.
