Why the fuck did the Vietnam war require the draft?

Not only was it a minor regional conflict against a small group of insurgents but the amount of troops that was decoted to it were only ewual to half the active US military at the time.

Gotta serve Uncle Sam. They saw communism, the ideology of the Soviet Union and PRC China, as a threat to National Security. They weren't necessarily wrong.

The communists didn't beat the US army. We signed a treaty with the commies and then they beat the south 3 years after we left

Because no one was interested in fighting a war against Communists in an Asian jungle. Also hippies and peace movements had a lot of youth not feeling the whole war thing. It wasn't like WW1 or 2 where young men wanted to enlist to help defend Europe or to push Japan back after Pearl Harbor, it was a war about fighting rebels in a jungle of a nation most Americans probably didn't know of or care about.

You realize that North Vietnam had an actual army, correct? I'm talking complete with the latest Soviet tanks, weapons, airplanes, motorized infantry, the whole shebang. It wasn't just VC muddling around in the fucking jungle. There was an actual fucking army that fought the vast majority of the time (and 100% of the time after Tet because the VC was wiped the fuck out). Even then, despite your claims, even at the height of the troop surge of '68, the NVA and US Armed forces in Indochina were nearly equal in size. Almost 3/4 of forces in Vietnam were South Vietnamese and ARVN was fucking useless.

Not only this, only a little over half of all draftees got sent to Vietnam. The majority of the rest got sent to Europe, usually West Germany. Vietnam was not the only fucking hotspot during the Vietnam years. The Berlin Wall went up in '61, there were massive Soviet troop movements in Eastern Europe between '65 and '75 (Vietnam ended for us in '73 though), Cuba was always fucking about, Communists in Africa were beginning to kick off. Vietnam was the focus, but even as the focus it was almost a periphery due to massive amount of territory the U.S. had to cover globally at the time.

Add all of this up with absolutely understandable Cold War paranoia and Domino fears (which were correct when you look at Laos, Cambodia, Burma, the Philippines and Indonesia), it makes perfect sense why the draft (which wasn't actually reinstated for Vietnam, but remained from Korea and draft numbers were increased) was called up to fight the war.

tl;dr
It's not that fucking simple.

Is interesting anon, because the way you bring it up it sounds like is wrong to think about "Vietnam" but one should rather think about the political context in which America found itself.
