You are forgetting the Knights Templar, which had loaned so much money to the French king that he decided to destroy them so he didn't have to pay anything back. I think that the same line of reasoning can be used for the question of why the Jews were so often expelled. Together with just being weird and isolationist in nature (Jews where I live had their own language until the second world war), which did not endear them to the native populations, which were not as multiculturally inclined as nowadays.
