The old 12th century castle was almost completely razed, the 19th century French guy rebuilt it in late 15th French style but with a load of fantasy neo-Gothic additions.

That small random castle is Gravensteen, it's pretty neat actually.

>world's largest empire in 12th century
I think they mean city, not empire
>>
"Running around naked and worshiping trees" is obviously a reference to the celts who were reported to occasionally enter battle naked and revered the oak tree. The Kingdom of Funan in Cambodia actually arose a few decades after the Gallic wars ended this era in modern day France and about the same time as the Roman invasion of Britain, arguably technological changes had already begun to take place in the decades before this so I am not sure whether your statement is all that accurate.

There would be another wave of economic change across the rest of Europe, extending as far as Russia, from the time of Charlemagne onwards which introduced the heavy plow and 3 field crop rotation. By the 12th century cathedrals were being built that arguably rivalled Angkor Wat in sophistication and grandeur.

Regardless, this is a valid question, from our perspective the wide fields of Europe seem much more hospitable than the jungles of South East Asia. However perceptions can be deceiving, were you to travel back in time, the land surrounding Angkor Wat would also be as intensively farmed.

http://www.livescience.com/1781-urban-sprawl-doomed-angkor-wat.html

Because they existed in very different environments it is impossible to judge which collective population group "accomplished more" and I don't particularly care. The individuals responsible for advancing agriculture in these regions were surely exceptional people though.

Isn't this why internment happened? People were afraid that the Japanese-Americans would secretly remain loyal to Japan and provide them inside information during the war?

Asians weren't like average_asian_american.png back then, internment happened due to paranoia and ignorance.

However nowadays it is different. The US is one of the most tolerant countries in the world, white liberals go nuts over the slightest bit of racism in a way that the majority in other countries never would. The problem is white liberals never know when to say "no" and minorities are increasingly acting more and more like spoiled children. Rather than being forced to confront difficult questions and look for real answers they simply believe whatever they want to believe.

Southeast Asia is one of the most underrated areas of the world historically. It's barely taught in world history classes and in many cases does not merit its own course in universities. It's glossed over to a ridiculous extent despite the high demand for spices and other trade items from the region for centuries. In terms of civilization, there were complex, populous and technologically advanced societies with incredible political histories. The histories of Java, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Burma are filled with ambition, decline, civil war, shifting geopolitical borders, diverse peoples, migrations, conquests and archaeological wonders yet many of those countries treated like a footnote. In other cases the region is treated like an appendage of India and China which contributed nothing on its own.

It's not even really my main field of interest but I find it annoying how ignored the region is and how little people care about it. This might sound trite but Southeast Asia is not like vast swathes of Subsaharan Africa or Aboriginal Australia where hardly anything worthwhile was going on. There really was a lot happening in this region and it really had a big impact on world history or at least regional (East Asian) history in premodern times.

Only in vain can one measure the greatness of a civilization based on such superficial traits as the the scale of its architecture, or else we would be forced to concede that the Aztecs in the 16th century were a more advanced and civilized people than the Spanish, Tenochtitlan being by most estimates the largest city in the world at the time, with magnificent temples floating as though by magic in the center of a vast lake. No, architecture is at best epiphenomenal. Far more meaningful and profound is the content of a people's intellectual achievements--their literature, their sciences, the sophistication of their mathematics and the depths of their philosophical thought, as well as their virtue and valor, for these directly reflect the innermost spiritual state of cultural life in a way that can never be adequately captured by its material products. Incidentally, this is also why I consider the Franks or the Italians of the 13th century to be far superior to their Eastern Roman contemporaries, who, despite the astonishing magnificence of the Hagia Sophia, produced almost nothing of lasting literary or philosophical worth and who, at the Siege of Constantinople, abandoned the largest and most fortified city in the world to a few thousand confused, encircled, and illiterate peasants, fleeing their lofty towers, as the Cistercian monks tell us, at the mere sight of Frankish ballistas.
>>
>>1306325

Nonetheless, the sort of revisionism that would elevate medieval Cambodia to a higher place of honor than Germany or Italy based on such superficial considerations must come as no great surprise from the modern globalized West, a civilization that itself embodies the triumph of matter over spirit to an extent unimaginable in any other historic culture.

biodiversity. Europeans had a difficult time, due to the lack of food and crappy environment. "jungle asians" is a stupid description of a people that had better availability of environmental resources.

"Europeans" or Neanderthals, had to scavenge for resources due to a lacking environment. This evolutionary pressure, made their brains adapt to a stress that was not known to people of a different climate.

People worship what makes them feel better about themselves. They may not understand that their belief in something bigger than themselves, is about themselves, but they do understand that these actions make them feel better.

Eh...Singapore is more of an exception rather than the rule, and actually it kinda tells a lot about the region in its current state. The tiniest country in Southeast Asia is the most powerful economically and most significant globally. Granted any power that controlled the major port on the Sunda or Malacca Straits historically was a guaranteed powerhouse and I suppose Singapore is sort of the heir to that tradition.

Admittedly Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia are coming along but Myanmar still has a long way to go. Brunei has the economic prowess but lacks diversification and is totally backwards under their laughable government. Thailand is somewhere in the middle while the rest are developing but also still have a long way to go.

I agree that there is a lot of potential in the region but I can see why it is kind of looked down upon as a backwater today. I feel like they are particularly underrated historically though given their long historical record of civilization and overall significance.

They're too weak to leave? You're the one criticizing it as hard as humanly possible yet still sticking around...

mate that was the administrative centre of the County of Flanders. The Count himself stayed there.

That's a fucking broad commonplace about Chinese culture 500 years ago , you are so fucking retarded to feel smug about that incomplete catastrophe of crude wikipedia knowledge you aquired.

Figuratively no Chinese will walk up to you and blame you for colonialism based on the colour of your skin. I lived with dozens of these fuckers together in a hostel. There's no victimization culture about that evil modernization of western powers in society or the media. If you think otherwise prove it.

I've actually been there. There are numerous connecting "castles" and the sculpting in the main courtyard is outrageous. Actually all of the sculpting is pretty damn good.

Also, I had to take a giant shit in a roach hole in the middle of a Buddhist colony while I was there. Super legit desu

Nah there's still plenty of western imperialist grievance in China. People (gets stronger the older they are) will go on and on about the 8 nation alliance, opium wars, Korean war, etc. etc. How could there not be with commie public ed?

You don't know fucking shit about the Chinese. Plenty of them are sick and tired of Westerners pissing all over their country, just because they're not open with their hatred and contempt doesn't mean it's not there. In China, particularly in the countryside, many Chinese men will jump on the opportunity to beat in a Westerners head if given the excuse.

Riddle me this /his/

A lot of the castles from the early to high middle ages look pretty fucking small. Considering that armies around that time were usually mustered in the thousands, if not tens of thousands, how would these be of any use? They look like they could house and feed only a couple hundred at most. Would it not have been better to meet your enemy on the field with 8,000 men than to weather a prolonged siege with 500?

Easy: they fucking held up your army.
>Be army of 8000.
>Approach small 500 man castle
>Take the time to settle down and besiege castle
Delayed. Enjoy that Guy's lord coming down on your ass.

Or
>Pass by 500 man castle.
Enjoy 500 men at your rear. Doing stuff.

Also attacking fortified places in general is fuck difficult. You're talking about castles n shiet set up in strategic positions like hills and mountain tops. And that's not even taking into consideration walls.
