Legionaires had two main weapons, the spear called "Pilus" which they threw at the enemy and that was often enought to win against an unorganized armies of barbars (they would just retreat)
Then they had a short sword called "Gladius" which was very flexible stab weapon and it was great in tight roman formations because it eliminated the chance of unintentionaly killing friendlies
