Poor leadership and lack of experience , also widespread nepotism.
Lack of equipment that matched up to modern standards, Mussolini knew as much, and asked Hitler to postpone the war for this reason

This, and also the Italians had no reason to care whether they won or lost the war.
They were pretty much just in it because Il Duce wanted to play with the big boys.

Italians don't really consider themselves Italian. It's all about 'muh region.' They weren't spooked enough to think throwing their lives away in the name of nationalism was a good idea like the Germans. A good army runs on spooks and money. Italy didn't really have either.

all of europe proper was reduced to ashes.
Italy and nearly all of her important historical sites were saved. its a miracle

This is something often neglected, Italy's "cowardice" in surrendering to the allies, allowed it to keep it self as the nation with the most WHS and keep a right wing Government with most of it's territory intact with any Nuremberg trials

Russian here. During the war we knew italians were wealer than germans so we made the strongest blow on thier position to pierce the front. They were the weak spot so got attacked more.

>They conquered Ethiopia desu
They really didn't.
Italian incompetence in Ethiopia after the the Second Italo-Ethiopian war was legendary. They actually started giving rebel groups machine guns, mortars and armored cars because they thought the rebels could be coaxed into switching sides, but they got played like a damn fiddle.

If you think they sucked during WW2, don't even try to read how "well" they fared during WW1.
