How would say 100 Roman soldiers go about beating a Greek phalanx of the same number. I think it would be impossible to get close to them. Or do you just have to do damage with ranged weapons
>>
Easy, just walk around their spears
>>
Flashbang, over and out.
>>
They would our manoeuvre the phalanx. A phalanx isn't effective in such small numbers, it has to be a long and deep line.
>>
They would be knowledgeable enough not to engage them head on on an open plain. The Romans originally adopted the Phalanx. It was their practically that caused them to evolve their tactics. The Phalanx was too inflexible and relied on too many uncertain variables to be the effective force projection that Rome demanded of its armies.

Id love to see the Alexander Phalanx engage the typical roman legion.
If Pyrrus, with worse troops than the first could even won them, imagine with the complete Macedonian phalan. Btw theres a reason Late Medieval times and Modern era phalanx had a comeback and was the rule.

Alexander extensively used his cavalry, later Greek rulers would drop the cav in favor of more pike men (cheaper than a horse owning noble)

A phalanx of 100 people would form a line about 60' wide. The Romans would walk around it.

Phyrrus only won thanks to his elephants. He wouldn't have had a chance without them.

Carthago also had elephants.

just...
go around

it was that easy

And they were close to beating the Romans

Would it have been a viable tactic to hurl firebombs at the densely packed formation to cause chaos amongst the ranks?
>>
>>1289647
Look up the Macedonian Wars you ignorant turbofaggot

The Maniple formation was modular, flexible and worked very well in most terrains. It had every advantage over the phalanx

And they were devastating if you weren't scipio

Greeks made a classic mistake.

>pyrrus fought marian legions

The successors had massive amounts of cavalry. The Seleucids had two thousand royal cav in the form of the Hetairoi and Agema but could also call upon large amounts of settler cav and mercenary cav. At Magnesia the Seleucids had six thousand cataphracts alone.
