How should this movie be seen? It goes without saying that it's riddled with historical inaccuracies, but perhaps that's not such a bad thing?
Maybe the story should be seen as more of a representation of the stories that the likes of Herodotus propagated, and less of a representation of what actually happened.

It's a fucking style over substance adaptation of a comic book. Don't try to misconstrue anything about it as historic fact or interpretation. It is meant for entertainment. Stop viewing movies as needing to be historically accurate unless that is the intended purpose. The setting does not presume realism and neither should the viewer.

the problem with this one is that it's using a historical setting as a key element of it's wider message and thematic points, and in the process horribly misrepresenting the history and muddying it's own purpose. It tries to say "manly western freedom will destroy debauched faggoty eastern tyranny" while holding up as it's champions a society with institutionalised homosexual pederasty, a horrifically oppressed serf population, and, by the movies own logic, pseudo-fascist ideals. It's nonsense,and the action wrapper surrounding it is tedious anyways.
