Should you mean history in general and don't mind searching/spending a fair bit I could reccomend both of asimovs books on the topic the Roman republic is rather thorough but mildly basic so is the empire it just depends on how extensive you want it. Also I could reccomend sulpicius's cook book or of course bello de Galico

Everything by Procopius, but look at his "secret history" with a historiographical eye.

If your idea of Rome extends to Byzantium then I would suggest reading the Life of Belisarius, by Lord Mahon. He takes greatly from Procopius, and from other of his contemporaries as well.
