How much did the average European scholar know about the rest of the world? About Far East and India and Sub-Saharan Africa, and all the rest? How much did the average nobleman? The average peasant? Did the commoners even know what countries there were outside Europe?

The average person today still knows jack shit and cant find most countries on a blank map

I am pretty sure most people have a crude image of the world map in their heads.

Most people would only be able to know where certain continents are.

After that, going any deeper would mean you'd lose the majority.

I'm not sue what time period you are even talking about, but if we are discussing Medieval peasants most of them could not even read and write so I doubt any even had much of a basic idea of the countries in Europe.

But surely they must have heard? Like, you know, "to the East there is X, to the south there is Y" or something?

Nobles would have grown up with the tales of Caesar and Alexander, Greek mythology etc.

India definitely registered on their mental map as that place where Alexander went.

As for Africa: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_the_African

I reckon even the common man would be familiair with North Africa and the Levant.
