I think that they looked at the most interesting things that musicologists and biographers were saying about Mozart, and decided to put a bunch of them into a movie. "Romanticized" would be the best word. Some of it was embellished, but very little of it was made up.

I also think you may be mistaking "culture" for "taking a little effort to defend a foreign point of view". Sitting on a couch watching movies doesn't make one "cultured" unless you're including the bacteria growing in and on your body. It's the way you process the information given, what you take away which is relevant to the people, places and ideas involved, which makes you cultured.
Arguing awards makes you cultured in one sense, certainly, the "culture of American filmography", but not overall the culture of Europe, the culture of music. Those acquaintances would immediately set off alarms that "this was not overtly a cultural movie", but a well-done fabrication.
