Trotsky's fanboys like to present him as a benevolent figure opposite Stalin. To me he's just another ruthless communist. How much truth is there to that?

Stalin was a ruthless opportunist, Trotsky was a ruthless communist.
But I don't think Trotsky has a lot of fanboys. Most communists regret that he did not seize the power when he could, but just because he was the only one with a real chance, and they would recognize that he was not as bad but not quite good.
And trotskyists do not see ruthlessness as a fault, and most would denounce benevolence as an idealist concept that is not appropriate for revolutionaries.

He had no problem attacking true socialists at kronstadt and the free territory. Stalin got to power opposing trotsky's economic policies of fast collectivization and industrialization, but ended up implementing them, so i can't imagine soviet economy being that much different with him either. Bukharin was the one actually willing to follow a different path.

The benevolent alternative to Stalin was Bukharin. Trotsky was actually more ruthless than Stalin, he was the one who first proposed the collectivization of agriculture, for example (he also proposed the militarization of industrial work force, but even Stalin wasn't ruthless enough to do that).
He probably would have been much less paranoid than Stalin, which would lead to less dumb shit like executing all competent military leaders, for example. The idea of the benevolent Trotsky opposing the malevolent Stalin most comes from Animal Farm, though.
Also, Trotsky was still a Leninist, so take that however you want.

Trotsky was massivley responsible for war-communism and all the shit that meant, wiping out entire villages because they opposed forced collectivisation etc.
He was commander of the Red Army and therefore responsible for thier crimes, betrayal of thier former ally, the black army, and the saliors rebellion of kronstadt. (and subsequent murder of up to 30.000 left-communists)
Ruthless...yes, ideologically his theroy has some merit, which is probably why he has so much fanboys.
