Rome nearly went under a 100 years earlier. It was going to happen inevitably. Things were actually prosperous and well under Valentinian I's reign.
Rome had actually always been filled with lots of eastern religions carried over, it wasn't some great conversion for "ways of our ancestors" to Christianity.

Christianity only acted as a catalyst for Rome's eventual fall. To Christianity's credit, the Roman Catholic Church did a decent job of maintaining centers of learning despite being a big part of why they even needed to do that in the first place.
It's the other way around. Christianity took hold because Rome was falling and people were scared.
