HNNNNNGGGGG

Is this a drill or a real riot?

I kind of wish melee was still relevant in modern combat. I'd love if more combat scenes in films were shown like this. So much more interesting than fucking grunting and slashing shit.
>>
>>1217822
I wonder if this would actually work against real rioters
>>
>>1217877
It's a drill, a pretty crazy one at that - the individual combat looks like the individuals were trying their hardest to actually riot in a training scenario.

Who knows who well it would work in an actual riot, I imagine it would work to some extent. An force without a general would just get wreaked in the panic when faced with those tactics, once they start getting split up and what not I imagine everyone doing the bolt.

It's not a combat situation, these rioters are not being pressed from behind to charge and can flee and regroup easily. Rioters tend to switch from passive to aggressive stances and might not always be attacking, they're always moving around the police lines and never forming a proper battle line, so these tactics are all show. IRL cops don't EVER show their backs or leave gaps for rioters because they're going to get their shit beaten up.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7mOVux83p8

now, compare it to what Romans might have faced, these guys are nowhere near as aggressive or numerous, a Gallic army would be as much or more dense than the Romans and charge with very strong momentum, denying a ton of the manouvering space you see there.

imagine a Black Friday mob instead of Rioters, an avalanche of sword-swinging savages screaming at the top of their lungs in their gibberish language decending upon you, either stabby-stabbing you or trampling you, throwing rocks, javelins and any random crap on the ground(including body parts), compacting you and your comrades among a flesh wall, reeking with all the sweat, blood, guts and shit and an absolutely deafening cacophony of metallic clanging, wails, shrieks and howls. You would be so close to the asshole trying to kill you you'd fucking taste him.

they wouldn't even need to kill eachother, just get fat so they can bleed a ton.

those webms look too much like Battle of the Nations' not-LARP whacking instead of showing swordmanship though, you gotta have a point-based system for hits but still allow for wrestling moves, kicks and brutal fighting, the point would be to make the fights impressive and entertaining, after all. Damnatio Ad Bestias totally needs to come back though. Those endangered species need a decent breeding program.

i have a question, why was it not ok to have "Samnites" after they became an allied tribe but the Thraex were a thing anyway?

The rioters are basically skirmishers against Romans.

How Caesar dealt with the Numidians who would not engage in melee, they just threw javelins and retreated when attacked
>Faced with an enemy of this kind Caesar proceeded to train his forces, not as a commander trains a veteran army with a magnificent record of victorious achievements, but as a gladiatorial instructor trains his recruits. How many feet they were to retreat from the enemy; the manner in which they must wheel round upon their adversary; the restricted space in which they must offer him resistance — now doubling forward, now retiring and making feint attacks; and almost the spot from which, and the manner in which they must discharge their missiles — these were the lessons he taught them. For it was surprising the amount of worry and anxiety the enemy's light-armed troops were causing our army, what with their making the cavalry chary of engaging for fear of losing their mounts, since the light-armed troops kept killing them with their javelins, and with their wearing the legionaries out by their speediness; for no sooner had a heavy-armed soldier, when pursued by them, halted and then made an attack on them than their speed of movement enabled them easily to avoid the danger.
>>
>>1219053
>i have a question, why was it not ok to have "Samnites" after they became an allied tribe but the Thraex were a thing anyway?
Because the samnites became socii, and they were italics anyway, whereas the thracians were just shitty provincials. Hell they weren't even provinced until like Vespasian, and they only got citizenship under Caracalla.

Yes, that's why they were top tier. I meant the thracians were bothersome, I fucked up the post.
Also the guy who told you illyrians likely referred to how they made up a pretty large part of the legions after Caracalla, and they gave a lot of excellent generals and even a few emperors. Whether it's fair to call them barbarians however.. Well I suppose the more inland living ones were still tribal and shit, but the coast was thoroughly romanized, and on the whole the region was more or less the same as Gaul.

>I wonder if there ever was a small division or contingent of ethnic sub-saharan africans in the Roman army
Not unless you count client kingdoms (vassallized Egypt had some nubian contingents).
Proper niggers could only have been auxiliaries from Egypt or Mauretania, in which case they'd have been a minority within a larger egyptian/mauretanian ethnic identity, or full blown legionaries after Caracalla, which meant they'd have been extreme minorities within wholly non-ethnic units.
In both cases it would have been a quite remarkably rare occurrence, because the african legions generally enlisted from the very populous north african coast, whereas the closest niggers lived pretty damn far from that. Former slaves were also usually too old to enlist, so you can't count those either.
In short, their presence would be a freak occurrence.

Was the Roman Empire ever a sustainable entity, or was it bound to collapse in on itself?

Was it the next step in a living society or was it the great death of a failed nation, like a supernova?
>>
>“I have been forced to say this because the Roman writers have no hesitation in saying that the Roman commonwealth had been ruined by moral degradation, and had in fact ceased to exist at all, long before the coming of our Lord Christ Jesus. They did not blame their own gods for this ruin; yet they blame our Lord for the transitory disasters, which cannot bring a good man to extinction, whether he lives or dies. Yet Christ’s teachings is full of instructions for the promotion of the highest morality and the reproof of wickedness, while those gods of theirs never took the trouble to impress such commands on their worshippers so as to save that commonwealth from utter ruin - in fact they were more concerned to ensure its ruin by corrupting morality through the baneful authority of their example. I do not suppose anyone will after this have the face to assert that the commonwealth perished because those gods ‘then deserted all the shrines and altars’ like friends of virtue, disgusted at the vices of men, since they used their efforts, by all those signs in the shape of entrails, auguries, and prophecies, to boast and commend themselves as foreseers of the future and assistants in battle, and thus are proved to have been present. If they had absented themselves, the Romans’ own ambitions would have fired them with less ardour for civil war than did the prompting of the gods.”

>“Can it be that because of the moral state of citizens like these our opponents will pluck up courage to quote, as usual, this statement of Virgil, in defence of their gods and in reply to us: “The shrines and altars now were all deserted, by all the gods through whom this realm once stood?”. In the first place, suppose it true; then they have no reason to complain against Christianity, or for the assertion that the gods have deserted them in disgust at that religion, because it was the behaviour of their ancestors that drove away that multitude of tiny gods like flies from the altars. But where was all that flock of divinities when, long before the corruption of ancient morality, the Gauls took Rome and set it on fire? Where they there, but asleep perhaps? On that occasion the whole of the city was reduced, and only the Capitol hill remained intact; and that would have been taken if the geese had not kept watch while the gods were sleeping. As a result Rome almost fell into the superstition of the Egyptians, who worship beasts and birds, for they celebrate a yearly Feast of the Goose.”

I listened to the audio books for all 6 of the Warrior of Rome series. Incredibly well written and very engaging. The narrator also lent a great depth to the characters, with various accents and emotions in the voicework. Easy to torrent them all, if you like audiobooks, otherwise read the physical copy or a pdf.

If you get the audiobook version, be sure to find the one narrated bt nick boulton. absolutely perfect.

these are all quotes from St. Augustine's "City of God"

>“But”, they will say, ‘many Christians also have been killed, and many carried off by hideous diseases of all kinds. If one must grieve at this, it is certainly the common lot of all who have been brought into this life. I am certain of this, that no-one has died who was not going to die at some time, and the end of life reduces the longest life to the same condition as the shortest. When something has ceased to exist, there is no more question of better or worse, longer or shorter. What does it matter by what kind of death life is brought to an end? When man’s life is ended he does not have to die again. Among the daily chances of this life every man on earth is threatened in the same way by innumerable deaths, and it is uncertain which of them will come to him. And so the question is whether it is better to suffer one in dying or to fear them all in living.”

>“There you see the Roman republic changing from the height of excellence to the depths of depravity. And this is no novel assertion of my own; I am indebted for it to Roman authorities, who far preceded the coming of Christ. After the destruction of Carthage, and before Christ’s coming, ‘the degradation of traditional morality ceased to be a gradual decline and become a torrential downhill rush.’ I challenge these Romans to quote injunctions against luxury and greed, given by their gods to the Roman people. Would that they had merely refrained from counselling chastity and restraint, without demanding from the people acts of depravity and shame, by means of which to establish a pernicious authority through a false claim to divine power! I challenge them then to read our Scriptures, and to find, in the Prophets, in the holy Gospel, in the Acts of the Apostles, and in the Epistles, those uniquely impressive warnings against greed and self-indulgence, given everywhere to the people assembled to hear them, in a tone resembling not the chatter of philosophical debates, but the thunder of oracles from the clouds of God. Yet they do not blame their gods for the self-indulgence, the greed and the savage immorality which, before Christ’s coming, brought the republic to those ‘depths of depravity’. They scold the Christian religion for all the humiliations inflicted in those later times on their sophisticated self-esteem

>Yet if the teachings of Christianity on justice and morality had been listened to and practiced by ‘kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all judges of the world, youths and maidens, old and young together’, those of every age capable of reason, male and female, and even the tax-collectors and soldiers addressed by John the Baptist - if all those had listened, the Roman commonwealth would now enrich all this present world with its own happiness, and would ascend to the heights of eternal life to reign in felicity. But some listened, while others rejected, and the majority found the blandishments of sin more congenial than the salutary harshness of virtue; and so Christ’s servants, whether they are kings, princes, or judges, or soldiers, or provincials, whether rich or poor, freemen or slaves, men or women, are bidden, if need be, to endure the wickedness of an utterly corrupt state, and by that endurance to win for themselves a place of glory in that holy and majestic assembly, as we call it, of the angels, in the Heavenly Commonwealth, whose law is the will of God.”

You snowniggers listen now
I'm gonna tell you how
To keep from getting torchered
When the Legion is on the prowl
Stay at yer hut at night
And lock your door up tight
Don't go outside or else you'll find
Those eagle banners flying high
Now I know you won't believe me
So I'm gonna tell you why
The Augusta XVIII
Is gonna get you by and by
I'm warnin' you that when I'm through
You're gonna change your tune
This story's 'bout a snownigger
His name was Adalwülf
He walked into a Horrea
He thought he'd get a bite
He thought that they would serve him
Since they passed the granting rights
The tribune told him no
And that he'd better go
He said, "No si're, my Basileo Valens say
I don't have to go."
So he sat there in that horrea
Bein' stubborn as a mula
No matter what he said
He wouldn't get up off that stool
He sat there like a jackass
Said, "I'm gonna räid und ræpe.
I came in here to eat, and
I ain't leavin' 'til I've ate."

The tribune had enough
He said, "I'll call your bluff."
He said, "If we can't treat you right
We'll have to treat you rough."
The horn was in his hands
He gave him one more chance
He wouldn't go, and so he called
The Augusta XVIII
When he saw them romans comin'
Adal knew it was too late
His eyes popped out his head
And his curly hair got straight
He said, "Oh lousy bronze folks
I didn't mean a thing.
Why did I have to listen
To that gothic rebel king?"

Now snowniggers understand
They tied up both his hands
He was at the mercy of
The Augusta XVIII
I knew just what they'd do
Adalwulf knew it too
I knew what kind of torture
They would put that snownigger through
Now the moral of this story
As plain as it can be
Snowniggers mind your business
And let us roman folks be
You'd better heed my warnin'
And try to understand
Don't you raid and rape
Around the Augusta XVIII

Ammianus Marcellinus. He's considered by scholars one of the finest Roman writers after Tacitus, which is amusing since he's a Greek who managed to learn Latin later on. He writes about the decline of the empire, the civil wars and the reign of his idol emperor Julian the Apostate. Lots of 10/10 depictions of the later Roman army fighting guerilla actions and full on siege warfare against the Persians which he personally took part in.

So besides pederasty did ancient Romans ever write anything on fetishes?
>>

both really

the Younger was the Republics last hope against despotic dictatorship

Oh auxiliaries, duh.

>>1232627
Pederasty wasn't a fetish, it was just an established part of ancient custom.

I am sure someone wrote something about some from of sexual deviancy. Considering that we are missing 7 of the 9 parts from something as important as the Trojan epic, I think some of the writings on ballbusting fem-dom may have gotten lost, among others.

I realize, but certainly some pedos were able to indulge beyond just a mentor relationship.

True, but we have archeological remains of lots of brothels. Plus, epic graffiti. Just wondering if any of that stuff elucidated Roman proclivities. Side point, notes on Celtic marriage practices.

Do you think they ever had the unfamous "50 tiny blonde girls raped to death by trained babboons" happen?
>>
>>1231154
You say that like they couldn't have looked as fare or pale as Germans. I'm blonde blue eyed and from south Italy. I know a lot of people that look like me.
