Post your favorite mosaics, I love these things.

>>1216839
why do some of the tiles fade over time, like the top right corner in the OP? exposure to the elements?
>>1216864
The tiles aren't faded, they're not there at all. Damage to the mosaic.
Op, are you that guy who is sexually aroused by tiles?
>>1216864
That's just damage over time. Those tiles have fallen off. Nowadays with varnished tile you don't need to worry about fading. If you make a mosaic it should last a very long time in proper conditions.
>>1213721
great thread, op. enjoyed the f outta it so far.
Really enjoyed the thread. You made me discovered incredible things. Thanks!

something eerie about this picture. i think its the fact that images of women in a secular setting in what looks like basically two piece bathing suits would not appear in western art like this until our own times. I wonder how many images the romans had like this that christfags destroyed (on the assumption that this wasn't some anomalous picture for a rich guy).

Was it autism?
And with that question I do not mean to demean persons with autism. Autism has been shown to result into marvelous creativity before.

neat, looks almost like enamel

I don't imagine it's any more labor-intensive than marble sculpture, but I could be wrong

pretty good animals compared to the guesswork of later centuries. how would they have seen a tiger?
>>1228258
They had zoos back in the day, you know.
>>1228261
they would have been menageries but i'm wondering where they would get tigers from
>>1228266
Probably the ocean. Tigers are known ocean fauna.
>>1213954
I like it. Bump.
>>1228266
A possiblity is that tigers used to be more widespread. See Caspian tiger.
Aion, god of time, pictured standing in a zodiac möbius. 3rd century.

I saw this in Ravenna. It was completely free, and breathtaking. Yet it's one of the smaller mosaics there.
Ravenna truly is an unsung gem of a place. 8 UNESCO world heritage sites, and you could see them in a day.
Why has no one posted the floor of Otranto cathedral yet?
>>1230263
please post it yourself, I've posted all but 5 ITT so some contributions (especially medieval ones) would be appreciated.

Rare animals were a valued trade resource.
Maybe they were imported from the ancient Alexandrine routes (aka silk road). There was a shitload of greeks in asia by then

Is that from Geneva ? I think I saw it, under the cathedral.
The big hole was made by workers, a long time ago (1900 ?) who put a pipe through the mosaic. By the time, it was still under the earth.
