How did the Khmer Empire, the most powerful nation in SEA with the largest urban centre in the world for the time at Angkor become the modern, impoverished Cambodia?
They collapsed Maya style and never recovered.

Didn't they suffer a thai barbarian invasion from the north?
is it true there were snake people?
how come the tang dynasty is always the color of Tang?

Yes, along with the ongoing conversion from Hinduism to Buddhism messing up social and political structures and the never-ending power struggles between princes with questionable legitimacy, it's a surprise it didn't collapse earlier.
Why is modern day Cambodia poor as shit. White people, followed by Pol Pot.

Khmer is grossly overrated. Srivijayan is hundred times better.

Been looking for illustrations of this time period. Do you know of any?

Nope. I don't think there is any other than what depicted by western historian.

Something to do with agriculture. Khmers fucked it up somehow.
In addition, invasions by multiple foreigners. The Tai migrated from SOuthern China to avoid T'ang encuckment and settled in what used to be western Khmer provinces. Then their warlord, Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao rebelled against their Khmer masters in the 1200's, founding what will be Thailand.

The Dai Viet weren't "barbarians." If anything, they were an East Asian-cultured country in Southeast Asia.
Compounding the Thai threat were the newly independent Vietnamese, who threw off the Song Dynasty yoke in the 900's-1000's. Copying their erstwhile Chinese masters in the fine art of LOL EXPAND TO THE SOUTH! :DDDD they started invading Khmer and Cham land, humiliating the Khmers and destroying the Cham.
