In addition, invasions by multiple foreigners. The Tai migrated from SOuthern China to avoid T'ang encuckment and settled in what used to be western Khmer provinces. Then their warlord, Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao rebelled against their Khmer masters in the 1200's, founding what will be Thailand.

The Dai Viet weren't "barbarians." If anything, they were an East Asian-cultured country in Southeast Asia.
Compounding the Thai threat were the newly independent Vietnamese, who threw off the Song Dynasty yoke in the 900's-1000's. Copying their erstwhile Chinese masters in the fine art of LOL EXPAND TO THE SOUTH! :DDDD they started invading Khmer and Cham land, humiliating the Khmers and destroying the Cham.
