Post any interesting/crazy/weird/funny historical facts here.
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson: friends, rivals, then friends again; 2nd and 3rd presidents of the United States respectively; two of the five members of the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence (which Jefferson wrote most of); generally considered two of the most important founding fathers, and the last two surviving.
Both died July 4th, 1826 of natural causes in their home states of Massachusetts and Virginia. It was the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States of America. Adams' last words were "Thomas Jefferson still survives" though Jefferson had actually died several hours earlier.
