I have something you might be interested in, /his/.
It's a short book from 1947 written by American labor journalist Ralph Chaplin. In it, he gives an overview of the methods by which organized Communists infiltrated labor unions and bent them to the ends of the USA Communist Party, acting as a liaison for the Soviet Union. He goes into great detail of old-school infiltration and propaganda tactics, and provides many examples of how US unions fell to such influence.
In all, lots of neat early-20th century labor history here. The names Chaplin brings up include Harry Bridges, Earl Browder, Joseph Curran, Michael J. Quill and Ben Gold.
Since I couldn't find a copy of it online, I decided to photograph and transcribe the book and share it with you guys. Hope you enjoy it.

"Red baiting" is held up to the public in general and to the labor movement in particular as a very vile and reprehensible thing. So efficient has been the work of the publicity machinery of the party that the term itself has become a kind of synonym for die-hard reaction and labor hatred. A few quotations from communist books, theses and documents will give an equally clear picture of the sort of propaganda and indoctrination which enabled Harry Bridges and his party-trained henchmen to split the West Coast labor movement into two parts. Let us start with what Earl Browder had to say about the CIO at the time the dual organization was in the midst of its first onslaught:
"The leaders of the CIO have shown great alertness to the main political problems of the day, and a growing readiness to act upon these problems, in which they faithfully reflect the rising political consciousness of the masses whom they lead. The CIO has become, not only a great force in economic life but also simultaneously in politics. It expresses in all fields a process which may be described as the birth of the American working class as an independent and conscious force...
"Labor generally, includes us Communists, who approach this question with our own standards, have every reason to proceed to the particular task and problems facing us, with great confidence in the strategical line of the CIO leadership...
"The strategy of the CIO has proved itself to be basically sound and correct. We find that it coincides with what we independently estimated as correct strategy...

This is how it works: First comes the scout stooge. He is the voice of one crying in the wilderness - a lonely figure, always espousing "progressive" measures and defending the "rank and file" from the wiles of "reactionary" officials. His wind-bag puffs out enormously as he voices such enticing phrases as "industrial unionism, solidarity and unity." Secondly comes another voice - usually a johnny-come-lately - giving support and encouragement to stooge No. 1. Pretty soon another, demanding the floor in his turn and working in full cooperation with the first two stooges. Before you know it, there is a little group of "rank-and-filers" within your union all making speeches and motions with machine-like precision. Then comes the "Rank and File Bulletin," usually a slanderous dirt-sheet full of insinuations, rumors and glib promises. A "house-cleaning" program to remove the "labor-fakers" is outlined and a "rank-and-file" mass meeting called for. If a real rank-and-filer manages to get to the platform he is hooted down as a "reactionary" or "fascist". The CIO-Communist machine is in operation, and God help the unfortunate organization that falls into its clutches!

Not only that, but the most persuasive and energetic of the stooges are selected for the "honor" of going to Russia to take finishing courses in their sinister trade under the watchful eyes of top flight Soviet officials. Each stooge, from the most ferocious rat to the most timorous mouse among them, is paid, drilled and pledged to put through a plan.

In the tradition of the "class war" also the San Francisco police force and California State Guard appeared on the scene to restore order. More shooting, clubbing and slugging as a result of which two more strikers and one more sympathizer were killed. By this time 115 on both sides were hospitalized. Harry Bridges, although still an alien, after a dozen or more years residence, wired a wailing protest to his friend President Roosevelt, "As American citizens we urge you to take necessary measures to eliminate this terrorism." The Cockney Commissar neglected to mention the communist strategy which relies upon terrorism to make it effective.
Tragedy continued to stalk the stricken waterfront. Two strikers were shot by policemen at Steuart and Mission Streets. Friends and sympathizers immediately banked the spot with flowers. By this time 147,000 Bay area workers were involved in a General strike to support the Joint Strike Committee headed by Bridges.
By this time the contest between Harry Bridges and the established unions entered a new phase. What was needed to clinch the communist victory and insure the defeat of anti-communist elements was to have the Moscow termites certified as bargaining agents for all West Coast maritime labor.
A coastwise NLRB election was held under the none too neutral NLRB as a result of which 12,000 once loyal ILA members were forced to pay tribute to Bridges and his communist-dominated CIO. As far as the longshore was concerned, every Pacific Coast port, with the exception of Tacoma, Port Angeles and Anacortes was now in the communist bag. More than 13,000 seamen and other maritime workers were under communist pressure and in direct line of fire from high-pressure communist propagandists.

It's well known that the IWW leadership were shit-stirrers and agent provocateurs that undermined the WFM's very strong position in the West and lost for them all of their gains. Even Eugene Debs wised up to the IWW within months and withdrew his membership in the organization. It wouldn't surprise me if other unions were similarly undermined historically.

Well this is anticommie propaganda, but it's not just paranoid ramblings. It is true that communists tried to extend their influence in such ways. It's legitimate in my opinion, not in that of the "labor journalist", but it happened, though the scale, effectiveness and level of organisation are likely exaggerated here.
