Slavery would've end by the turn of the century (at the absolute latest) regardless. Especially if the war had been won in 1863 or 1864 after the extraordinary carnage and destruction of the war had irrecoverably affected Southern society or if the Confederacy had adopted Cleburne's proposal of emancipating slaves in exchange for military service earlier and had managed to turn the tide. Cleburne himself remarked in his writings that his proposal for arming slaves would effectively be the end of slavery, but that it was still preferable to Northern subjugation.
The very act of secession and going to war basically shot the institution of slavery in the foot with a .69 Caliber Buck n' Ball musket. Even in the best of circumstances, the South would've been left with a less than friendly neighbor who would be willing to either finance slave revolts to destabilize the country or at the very least be accepting of escaped slaves, an army that wasn't sufficient in size to put down the next John Brown wannabe, and a poor white population that would have been increasingly unwilling to do the bidding of the Planter class.

Well it worked during the American Revolution for both sides during the American Revolution. In fact, ex-slaves proved to be some of the most motivated fighters in both the British and American Armies.

The very problem with Cleburne's plan was that it wasn't seriously considered until the final year of the war, long after it was too late. Cleburne didn't even make the proposal public until January 2, 1864 (although he had been dwelling on it for months by that point). If he had proposed it and it had been adopted a year earlier, before the full ramifications of the Emancipation Proclamation took hold, it might've worked.

You're right that desertion among slave soldiers would have been a serious flaw with Cleburne's plan. As early as late 1861, slaves were already fleeing into Union-held territory in large numbers (where Union forces held them as "contraband") or taking over plantations after their masters fled. That was in fact, the primary reason why Richmond did not take it seriously until 1865.
