Start by reading A Cartoon History of the Universe volumes 1-3, A Cartoon History of the Modern World 1-2, A Cartoon History of the United States.

Then read Howard Zinn's textbook on US history. Someone will have a bitching shit fit about this, but Zinn's book was designed as a teaching aid for ignorant US undergraduates. If they're sensible they'll tell you to read Zinn alongside a lioniser like Foner.

From there you need to start to get into historiography, of the theory of history.

read these:
The Whig Interpretation of History
What is History (EH Carr)
The Poverty of Theory (EP Thompson)
Making of the English Working Class (EP Thompson)
Black Jacobins (CLR James)
Caliban and the Witch (Federici)
History & Class Consciousness (Lukacs)

After that, pick a specific topic, such as Austria Hungary's military problems with ethnic integration in the 1870s.

If you don't read Lukacs alongside Poverty of Theory you'll misunderstand what Thompson is critiquing and why metaphysical "history" has no relationship to historiography.

Play Age of Empires, Total War, and maybe some ebin map painting sim, then come straight to /his/ to shitpost.
